*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I can't even fathom putting my phone down and typing on it with my index fingers. I don't even put my phone down without resting it on something. Right now it's besides me at my desk but on top of my notebook.

I also saw that you can upload pics to Picasa Web as well on that video..Anybody confirm whether the email client will be the same as on the new E-series devices? That would be extra sweet.

Pre availability is going to be a question at its announced launch, and right now supplies look meager when stretched out. Nokia doesn't want to promise something without delivering adequately, I guess, as many suggested before.

And Apple's just on a different level when it comes to product releases, fixing leaks before they even start, and whatnot.

well i actually liked the n82. i really disliked the n95 keyboard. the point i was trying to make is that it looked like crap and tons of people complained. i did not order the n97, but the keyboard seems to be getting the same negative response.

OMG! That's SO much sexier than the N810. I'ma likin' what I'm seein'! Organizer/PIM?! Finally!

EDIT: Nevermind. This is supposed to be the Harmattan release of Maemo? How accurate can this be since Fremantle (OS coming on the next tablet) is still in beta? Not believin' it.

I got tired of waiting for amazon to ship and took advantage of the stacking promos at nokiausa.com. I know I said that I would never pre-order form them again (based on the horrible experience of canceling my preorder), but after tax and the 2 coupons my order came to $598 with free overnight shipping. Amazon was $619 with overnight shipping with no definitive shipping date.

I live only 1 hour from Brightpoint, so here's to hoping it might get here tomorrow!

I totally forgot about the dual core vs the dual cpu. Still I think there is some kind of hardware acceleration for video.

Found it.

Toshiba to Launch World's Highest Performance 3D Graphics LSI for Mobile Phones

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced a dedicated 3D graphics LSI that will add previously unseen levels of realism and excitement to games played on mobile phones. The new LSI, "TC35711XBG", can render 100 mega-polygons*1 a second, a performance that far surpasses that of current handheld game consoles. Samples of the new graphics LSI will be available from October.

Toshiba's new chip integrates a new developed 3D graphics processor that achieves 38 times*2 the performance of existing products. Its extremely advanced capabilities open the way to further development of software applications of mobile phones. The new chip is also compatible with programmable shader*3, and its advanced rendering capabilities will bring realistic shading and reflectivity to mobile phones for the first time.

Alongside the new 3D graphics processor, the new LSI also integrates Toshiba's "Media Embedded Processor" (MeP) to handle sound, a host processor, a WVGA LCD controller for wide-screen displays, and brings all the essential components of a game console onto a single chip dedicated to enhancing mobile phone game performance.

With the launch of the high performance TC35711XBG, Toshiba will contribute to further development in games for mobile phones, while reinforcing its position as a technology and market leader in advanced LSI.
*1 In terms of pixels, it can render 800 mega-pixels a second.
*2 Compared with Toshiba's existing product, TC35296XBG, which offers a high
performance of 2.6 mega-polygons a second.
*3 The latest programmable technology for 3D graphics which brings realistic shading.

Lol, how about E71- the most battery life ever witnessed on a phone? Slimmest profile?

And E75 - didnt have that issue at all. Agree with the rest of the cons, which is why I sold both of em (screen size wasnt cutting it)

What I'm telling you is that iPhone and G1 provided updates with a lot of basic functions that must have been there since the beginning not because they were just cool people, I'm not telling you that Nokia has done right with the updates, I'm telling you that they aren't being that bad either (compared with the other companies).

Symbian has poor documentation for developers and it's not as easy as WinMo to get a native application developed, that's the main reason. The second reason is that Symbian is not so hack friendly as WinMo.

I'm hoping that will change with Symbian Foundation... But of course we'll have to wait and see.

I agree with most of what you say. The 8 or 9? screens of the iPhone is crazy and all loaded with little tiny icons. I don't ever have more than 2 pages ever.

That having been said 2 pages or 10 widgets would have been a nice number to launch such a strategic concept in Nokia's future device plans. I suppose the future will bring more. But I frankly see no legitimate technical reason why it didn't start with 2 pages. I suppose the Nokia user must come to terms with the pace of software development at Nokia.

Active standby on the E71/E66 is very fast. For e-mail I just do down and click I'm there. But more often I use the hardware key which is like gold for me.

As much as I malign the 5800, its active standby was one of its best features. Just tap on my appointments and the calendar pops up. It has enough space to show me not all my appointments but also my to-dos so those are always staring me in the face to get down. Maybe I could live without an E-mail widget if the 5800's top right hand corner notifications area is preserved.

What I am not impressed with is that the music player widget occupies an entire space and basically does nothing but serve as a music player shortcut when there is no music playing. So it kind of is not worth the space and in the process you lose the functionality of the wonderful auto-hide based Active Standby. I think Active Standby is perfect for such informational items from within the phone itself. It auto resizes and auto manages the space in such a way that really up to 7 different things will show data when they are active and then give space to other items when not active.

OTOH, widgets as they stand are perfect for live updates from external data sources. I feel each data type should have been given it's own screen so that we could leave each data type (internal or external) to display where it could most efficiently be displayed.

In an ideal world, you could mix and match areas so we could group them by function or interest. So maybe one for business or one for leisure.

I think someone could build a widget that replicates Active Standby functionality keeping only what the user needs. Such as a widget that shows appointments but pushes them away when an e-mail is received and shows the e-mail instead. Then the music player trumps appointments but not e-mail so when a song plays it shows also in the same widget. However you'd need sharp nails to use those lines as shortcuts to the respective application.

I guess there are many creative solutions to a problem I strongly feel should not have been imposed on users.

I hope the privacy page offers optional widget space before the phone ships or even with the first post launch FW update. I think options are great.

I don't know, maybe the base screen is glass, but the top digitizer part has to be flexible. I don't know how they would do it otherwise.

What they need is pressure sensitivity. That would justify a resistive screen.

i have a feeling that N97 might be better than people here thinks. i am yet to see a negative review of this phone , something must be very nice that is blinding early reviewers

As I said, the term "hater" wasn't meant to insult anybody. It was the term I found for those who are very critical of the N97 (not without reason).

In regards to the Touch Pro 2, I have some concerns as well. I don't dislike WinMo as some of the other members of this board. Actually I find it very usable and powerful. With help of xdadevelopers, you can do almost everything you want. What I have is some bad experiences with the ATT Tilt. The battery life was ridiculous; video playback was choppy; the camera, absolutely subpar and video recording, abysmal. The TP2 uses similar camera resolution and video recording (still at 15FPS) and I don't know if the 1500 mAH battery will do much better than the Tilt.

Now about the keyboard on the N97. Re-watching the factory video, it looks like the keys are not exactly keys but small "bumps" on a membrane that's glued to the base. I don't know about you guys but I'm concerned now that the problems are not limited to the usability of the KB but also to the durability. Of course, I hope I'm wrong.

Is it July yet?

I don't agree with this. Especially when it comes to resistive screens. I'm not sure the whole touchscreen thing will actually be universal 5 or so years from now
