*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Yes, but look at the N95. That was released as a US variant, hence the N95-4

Either way - don't know if it will come T-mo compatible but I can almost guarantee you that after a while, the NAM version will be made, so at the very least, AT&T users will be able to get it.

I've done the photo thing and it doesn't impress me much at this point at all. It gets old. You have to notice that many of your points revolve around what others are impressed by. I too have used voice navigation to direct people to places. It's nice, but every other platform except iPhone has that now.

The Youtube, Facebook thing and all that is still there on the Pre, but now you just access it by the person or the activity. So instead of having my whole Facebook up (I'm sure that's also available if you choose) I have the additional option of typing for example "THETRUTH" and I can find all your Facebook posts, e-mails, numbers, e-mail address, and all your posts on every site I choose to collect data from and that you choose to give me access to. I suspect this will eventually include everything under the sun including Facebook, Yelp, Flickr, YouTube anything, anywhere. Now that is powerful.

I'm done with the Nokia camera thing it's very limited in when and where you can use it. When you need it most - in indoor social situations - it fails. That is the state of "everything but the kitchen sink" technology today. There's nothing we can do about that.

However, the basics are being redefined. My phone is communication tool and not so much a "multimedia computer" none of these devices can even hope to do justice to that term yet. I'm done doing those kinds of things. It does not impress me one bit. Everyone's phones today can play videos and play music and take decent pictures - enough to post on the web for sure. It's not that novel anymore. It has come in handy for some pictures and some videos and I look at those pics and videos and really the value of those were that they were captured and they are discernible on a screen, not so much that it was 640x480 or 5MP. They are simply memories.

What I would find 100 times more useful is the phone that let's me categorize each such picture and video and let's me find them in a second when I want to watch something or show someone the content of the video not so much about "my phone has 5MP or 640x480". Nobody really cares anymore. Everyone has decent enough cameras on their phones that the memory is captured effectively. I'm not trying to nor will I impress anyone with it. And I don't care to either. My phone is for me and what I need, never to impress anyone.

Anyway many other phones can do similar impressive things like TV-out, or transferring videos and pictures. Even the iPhone mercifully lets you copy pictures out of the folder. WinMo can do so much more than S60 in some areas. It's RDP is better, its SMB sharing support is built in. I could just have it lying around and pull files out using Wi-Fi. I used to browse the network with it, play what I wanted. I used to real time encode TV and stream it to a WinMo device - all of this in 2002. So that was impressive then. I had what was kind of a Slingbox back then, sure the controls were clunky in that you had to RDP to the computer with the TV tuner and change the channel.

It was all cool, but today there are nice solutions for that on every platform. There is a new one that pops up every few months. A new DLNA server, a new "slingbox" a new media streamer, there is Orb, there is Twonky, there is Firefly, there is even iTunes remote, Slingbox, Sonos, Hava. All that stuff is common now with far more polished solutions catering to WinMo and iPhone that let you access and control your music and videos from any device using any device. Most people aren't tech savvy enough to do it except for Mac owners because that ecosystem is so easy to setup and use. I could just get my grandparents who have never used a computer a Mac Mini and a Airport Express and iPod Touch load some tunes and they're listening to music on the stereo and on the iPod controlling it all so effortlessly. It is that easy. When a friend shows me that setup I can go into detail about the technical merits of a S60 device and how in theory it could do the same, but you know it would require a bunch of elbow grease and the result would not be as reliable or as smooth and simple. Sonos has iPod touch control. So if a friend showed me that, what can I say. My s60 can use the web interface of Squeezecenter? Any device with a browser can, and the iPhone has an app to totally control it faster and better even on that platform - iPeng.

The one device we carry on us is so personal to each of us that we all have our own needs. So I suppose those who have never tried the Nokia "standard package" would like to try it in this device.

My honest impression of the "standard package" is that it reeks of jack of all trades master of none. The music player on a $100 DAP is better and more featured. The camera on a $100 P&S blows away of of these. Just not attracted to it anymore.

But communication and information access is the more important thing to me now. I'm sure the N97 could have a HoFo widget that might be able to show new posts in threads you select or PMs. But that will be one of five I am allowed.

The Pre has the polished touch interface that even shows up the iPhone. The gestures are sick. And it even lights up to tell you it registered your gesture. It looks like it just responds.

The video I saw was like this thing could have you connected to anything, anytime and have whatever data you want brought to you and shown to you in reference to anything you wish. So it breaks through the whole Facebook, Youtube mindset in that I could have a widget solely to bring me funny videos from YouTube + Ebaumsworld + whatever else and I would be agnostic towards the source, but specific about the subject. It is the beginning of a paradigm that breaks away from conventional ways of accessing data. You still know where it came from but you don't need to look in 10 different places. The phone does the looking, you do the responding, enjoying, analyzing, learning, communicating.

This is an advance I think that current technology is ready for. When the day comes when a phone camera can match even a 4 year old digicam or a cheap DAP in actual quality and functionality I will welcome those back. But I tried what 2006 technology gave us and I don't need to revisit that. Maybe 2012 will integrate those things with quality and features that match today's standalone products of the kind. Give me even 2004 Canon SD300 quality shots and I'll check out the hot new "camera" phone. Otherwise just help me view my data in ways that I can better apply it to my life in ways that help me capitalize on opportunities that otherwise would have escaped me.

The Pre isn't just about business, even though it is perfect for it, the same principles apply to relationships with everyone in your personal sphere also. So many more opportunities to stay in touch with people and your interests. You just saw your friend post a review on a Thai restaurant on Yelp, you can then start a conversation with that person or post a comment to his post or otherwise share common interests better. It will still capture the moments that need to be captured 2, 3.2 or 5MP the moment is the moment and not the megapixels. Would I like more better? Sure and Nokia 5MP is nice but not game changing. I am not getting Canon SD1100is shots out of this thing, but maybe a little better than the 5800, but not by enough that I really care. I think that the bragging rights game was a 2006 game. The 2009 game is all about how we will be connected to friends, colleagues, family, interests and opportunities while not needing to sit in front of a computer.

Many of us associate BB with business, but guess what other group absolutely LOVES BBs? Teenage girls and young women. Many are students, never yet set foot in the corporate world. They cannot get enough of that BB messaging. They themselves call it the Crackberry and with good reason. It just keeps them connected. They pay for that BB plan and have no business use for it. They use it personal use and you could trade them anything with a 50MP camera and 4k video recording, and they'd still keep the BB.

So don't mistake the Pre for a business device. The original Palm was never targeted that way and neither is this. It is a universal device built for effective communication in the internet age. We all need to communicate whether we run businesses or need to plan a trip to the mall for this afternoon. I'm sure it take decent enough pictures that I could post a picture from it on a website like Yelp or Flickr. Heck the 2MP N90 had Flickr integration so it was good enough for Flickr pics. I could communicate with a 2MP phone camera picture. I'm sure I will be able to with a 3MP picture from this.

Just my take on this.

OmniaHD doesn't excite me at all because it has been my experience that Samsung makes crap. I'll never use another Samsung (or LG while we're on the topic) ever again. I'm still waiting for Motorola to make something that's not a RAZR.

Plus, I need a phone with keys. Enough with this touchscreen crap

Really? I only see a couple jumps looking back. With a couple oddball exceptions (and some regression here and there), mostly the same 222mhz OMAP 1710 CPU from multiple models (N70,N80,N90) in 2005 until finally going to the ARM11 369 in 2007. Which they're on through 2009. They definitely stayed with that dual slider alot longer than they should, but even that could have had some longetivity... I remember hoping N96 would make a good touchscreen in addition to that dual slider (since I always liked my numpad to be hardware that complimented the touchscreen, but that was possibly my legacy from the removable flip from the SE P-series)

Jobs. :D See his refusal to go beyond a nominal one button mouse.

maybe its just me then, but i run rings around my 5800 when i use my n85 and maybe its because of how the touch is implemented, that even the double tap method dont always work which is why i grab the stylus which them requires 2 hands.
I also mentioned the iphone you need 2 hands to do certain things where is a phone like sr1329's e66 is a one handed device always.

Hmmm I don' think everybody types with thumbs especially when the device formats like the n97 and can be set on a flat surface. The E90 comes to mind also. I type way faster and mistake free with two fingers on my E90.

I just checked on the NOKIA USA website to check the status of my N97 Pre-order and says that it's still on Backorder. I also ordered the 5800 and it says that the 5800 "and" the Nokia Bluetooth headset which comes with the N97 are both "in progress". Do you think that NOKIA USA will ship the 5800 "and" the Nokia Bluetooth headset will ship "before" the N97? What does it mean when it says "in progress"?
