*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Not to beat a dead horse anymore but what is killing Nokia (imo) is not their lack of hardware innovation but their failure to embrace the third party developer community. S60, as much as I know it and love it, seems to be a dying platform. I still keep my iphone 3g for one reason: apps! I am in the medical field and use Epocrates, along with many other health-oriented apps that I rely on - no such luck on S60. I recently e-mailed Epocrates' developers and asked about possible future S60 support and the reply was a resounding "NO". There are also a multitude of apps to control my Macbook remotely, which I rely on as well. Show me a good remote control app for S60.

Remember OS/2? Now that was an excellent OS that ran circles around Windows at the time but ultimately failed because of lack of third party interest. The N97 is a solid device but should Apple decide to slap a 5-8MP cam with HD video on the iphone, Nokia is dead in the water.

Personally, I think Nokia is betting on the wrong horse by focusing on "services". Ovi will be a bust compared to what Apple has going. Their strength has been hardware (at least up until the N95 spinoff parade for the last couple of years). However, "services" have a much higher profit margin than building phones with high end hardware and that is what Nokia is counting on to get them through these economic times.

is there anywhere, I can get a NAM N97 for under $600USD in NYC/New Jersey? I am going to NYC at the end of the month and will be staying in New Jersey, would love to pick up a N97 then but somewhere in Manhattan would probably be more ideal. I can get one on newegg.ca for $699CAD, that's about $600USD, do stores in the US sell for cheaper? nokiausa.com still shows $699USD, so I assume that is still the price at the flagship store?

I noticed that you are from Indiana. Ron Jeremy comes out to the Ponderosa Ranch every July as a host for the annual convention that they have over there at the ranch. :buddies:

Same thing here... let's wait until they actually show tracking information tonight. I paid for overnight shipping so will report back Monday if it's actually gets here.

All pre-orders show backordered because technically it is

Anyone that text messages while driving should be stoned to death with iPhones. The way i see it, if people wanna text and drive and there's only poles, concrete walls, trees, concrete walls, cliffs into the ocean, etc. around ,then fine...but when other people are at risk for that recklessness, that's a whole other story.

Believe me, the antenna design that goes into an 850/900/1900/2100MHz antenna is quite challenging. And now with T-mo on 1700MHz it'll likely be a long time before we see all bands in a single device.

Just got the call from Nokia confirming my order since I'm having it shipped to my office instead of my of my billing address. Looks legit. :w00t:

So there's no cancelling of the original pre-orders huh? Guess I'll be shipping the first pre-order back and saving $245 instead of $260. :D

Not gonna find too many iPhone users in this thread LOL. There aren't any apps I'm going to miss because I'm upgrading from an E71. There are a few apps I'm looking forward to using because they weren't available on FP1

I have a Nikon DSLR but I don't carry that around. I have my camera phone with me all the time and it's also my snapshot camera. 10MP on a non-optical zoom camera phone is useful because by cropping the image to 5MP or even 3MP you can achieve a high degree of zooming and still maintain good result. With a 3MP camera phone, you don't have that flexiblity.
