*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I ordered 2. One from NokiaUSA which I'm having shipped to a friend in CT who will ship it to me upon delivery. One from Mobile City Online having shipped directly to me. MCO is selling it for $30USD cheaper than Nokia and they ship to Canada so by all means go for it.

The dev community is great and I haven't even really dabbled into that yet since I'm waiting for a beta that jailbreakable and has the Cydia store instead of the ICE (?) store. I thought Cydia had more of the cool stuff. Also jailbreak application compatibility in OS 3.0 is not as good. So I guess I have to wait it out in stock and try the jailbreak route after a final OS release.

Did you say your BB will backup and restore even your text messages? Does it also offer to save extra messages in backup? So you don't have to keep them all on the phone but still can access them. Or is text message number not even an issue in BBs? On Nokia every one I've used after about 300-500 messages the phone goes nuts. It would be nice to never have to worry about something like that anymore.

I think in any OS it is very important to make the update process easy. It facilitates more frequent releases and less disruption to us as the customers.

So could you try out OS 5.0 for and not lose anything? And could you also go back to the current released version with no loss of data or settings?

That's why it's an external stylus. I don't mind them making the design of it...ummm...different because I'd hate to have a pen stylus with nowhere to store it on the phone. I doubt I ever use it tho.

Yeah, I think they all have that silver sticker. Good thing it's easily removed if you want to so the protector will sit flush with the screen.

Should be, considering you pay nothing for the actual phone and there's no activation fuss as with the iPhone. The Fuze should sell easily for over $300 since the refurb units are typically like-new.

I really don't get what you guys are so mad at tho. If the phone performs as fast as the E71, are you still going to be complaining?

By the way, why does Eldar just happen to have an N97 lying around? LOL

On a phone frankly, I'll get my impact from the words. I don't have the luxury of deriving impact from the layout of a page of data I need to access on the go with one hand on a 3.5" screen.

So you think just because it hasn't been done that it's not possible...? Well sorry if I like thinking ahead of things :P
First of all, I know it is possible, Nokia Engineers are very well capable of putting 512 RAM and OMAP 3 in there if they wanted to. So the technology exist, my question was, if it exist outside of Nokia Labs...

Yes, didn't think about the 5800, i'll ask if they can do anything with it.

If there's one thing the N97 has going for it over most phones its presentation. There are a lot of bells and whistles which is impressive since S60 isn't the prettiest OS.

Wow Gwapz....I never thought I'd hear the day where you'd put S60 down. Yeah I was excited about the N97 because I think the 5800 is well made and the touch screen is really nicely laid out, but all that changed with the Palm. I'm sticking with the 5800 and my trusty BB Bold until the Pre is released.

I think Nokia has been a little slow with their smartphone development. I'm excited about the Pre and the new Android phones that will be coming out....

Me Three...may buy it as a 2nd phone to do development on, but I just can't bring myself to the closed ecosystem that is shoved down my throat.

I had a generation 1 unlocked/jailbroken iphone, but got annoyed that I would have to go through the same dance every time an update released.

Wirelessly posted (nokia n95-3: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.4; U; Series60/5.0 Nokia5800d-1b/20.2.014; Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413)

nokia deliberately improved build quality on the n97 and n86 compared to all previous n series models because of all the complaints. So yes n97 is still plastic but dont expect poor builsd quality from past models.

To be clear, blaming piracy for ceasing development for a platform is a cop-out. EVERYTHING gets pirated and it doesn't stop development. 2 days ago I downloaded Fight Night Round 4 for my Xbox 360...2 days before it's released in stores, is Electronic Arts going to stop making games for Xbox because of it? No, probably not.

All this talk about the N97 is getting me hot and bothered. I think it's dead sexy too, but I keep reminding myself that it's going to be like a dumb cheerleader. I'm going to count on you guys to talk me into buying one if the OmniaHD seriously disappoints me.

On the topic of typing, do you think the groove on the back is going to become a wobble issue on surfaces when you're trying to type with the keyboard?

Some more youtube videos
This is a swedish guy using the indoor navigation on Nokia maps to find shops in the mall.
The video is really boring and he doesn't show the N97 screen until 2:50 into the video just to warn you.

This is the same guy reviewing the N97
Lots of talking at the beginning. N97 UI starts at 2:15 into it.

Interesting how everything is subjective. I, for instance, didn't like the KB on the E90. It was too wide (requiring too much finger travel) and the keys didn't have a good feedback.
I've never touched a N97 but if you're saying that its KB usability is worse than the Centro's then I'm really worried.
