*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

I agree with Johnny when he says resistive sucks. Well, anybody would agree, but what I'm really agreeing with is that the N97 should have had capacitive. Their excuse about Asia needing it is not a good argument...

I've used phones in HongKong before, and there are other ways to input Chinese characters. For example, how do you think I can do this on my laptop without a resistive screen? 你好,我是中国人。 Also, how do all the hundreds of thousands of people who don't have a touch screen AT ALL input their Chinese characters?

It's called pin-yin, which is a very simple way to enter Chinese; the software just converts the pin-yin into Chinese characters. This system is taught in China, so everyone knows it (well, at least those who went to school). Mind you, if you didn't go to school, you probably wouldn't own an N97 in China.

In HongKong, where pin-yin can't be used (pin-yin only works for Mandarin Chinese speakers) you have input using strokes. I don't know if any of you know what I'm talking about, but you can write any Chinese character just by using five different "strokes" in the correct order.

In Taiwan, you have the "BPMF" system, which is the phonetic system that is similar to the latin alphabet; a symbol to represent each sound. This has been used on keypads for a LONG time, there are enough keys to support this system on both qwerty and on alpha-numeric.

Korea's Hangul system can be adapted for keypad. I don't know anything about Japanese input, but I imagine it is very efficient already since their phones are crazy cool.

All of these input systems can be implemented on a capacitive screen in the same way that we utilize T9 currently on S60v5; there really is no reason to keep resistive anymore.

Sorry for the long post.

1) no serious problems despite loading about 7 or 8 apps, including several of the free ones from the nokia blog and nokia messaging. Main nitpick has been the screen lock thing, which has an easy workaround by hitting the menu button and then unlocking.

2) screen is incredible. easily as good as the iPhone and iPhone 3G, just without the multitouch. Very vibrant!

@Blaxx

Well i would suggest if it you can't take it don't dish it out! you have been happy to suggest those of us that don't want it can't afford it and are jealous of those that can which by the way is utter BS. As from when i first came Nokia and S60 between June 2006 and 2008 i had an N70 and then a soon as they were realeased an N73, N93, N95, N95 8GB, E90 so money really isn't the problem well not if the devcie is actually good and worth it. If it had been any good i would of also got an E71 instaed of the much more expensive Bold.

You seem to feel it's OK to insult and belittle anyone that doesn't agree with you about how brilliant this devcie will be and that's perfectly OK as you support Nokia and this devcie and will never see any failings with it will you?

You asked why some of us are disappointed and what difference the processor will make so i have tried to explain it to you. You then praise the S60 Web browser but then admit you only look at Wap pages and can't understand why the rest of expect to be able to use the proper Web with as close as possible desktop experience. By your own admission i have listed the limited use you need from your device and whilst it's OK for you to question us about why it's no good for us we can't ask any questions or question your motives and judgement.

Sorry where you motives and how you view this devcie meant to be a secret or are you embarrassed about who and what you are and how you view a devcie as part of your obviously very fragile ego? and how it is meant to boost others opinion of you. Well if so either treat others as you expect to be treated or grow up and stop being so shallow and if you don't want others to know about you don't tell us then.

IS IT JUNE YET!!!!!

Pre-central net had an hour of live streaming while they were presenting the new Palm Pre and their applications ,features, etc.
Let me tell you , the phone have a lot of issues and not ready for prime time. After all the hoopla !!!! is disappointing, a disaster !!!

he made it seem like specific high end users wont like it. Based on what he was showing.. i believe the average user like me will definitely be happy with it

everyone finds something new to complain but they praise things that others complain about. so it's safe to say the phone isn't perfect (as we already know). seems the phone just has to be used and it ends up being a personal preference.

Couldn't resist and pre-ordered in white. Depending on what's exactly in the new iPhone and T-Mobile offerings, I may cancel since I don't really intend to switch to AT&T.

Only thing giving me hesitation is the lack of a class-leading cam and no xenon flash. I can live with the processor.

It's amazing how many people don't know what RIM is even though they use Blackberries. I don't even think they put the RIM logo on them at all anymore tho

You are probably right. I was able to run quite a few applications with an app called 'virtual keyboard 1.0.1' that wont work otherwise in 5800.

I'm think more app could work if the provide hardware left soft key and right soft key.

When it asked him if he wanted to change the wallpaper, he most clearly press below the widget. I really hope the new features don't end up on the XpressMusic...yeah i said it.

I agree this is concerning. My E71 as it's currently configured has around 68MB free at boot. This is better on a fresh device but I don't remember that number on the E71 with the latest firmware. Once I get Roadsync and NM running it's down to 62 or so.

Other app that take away from RAM:
Google Search App: ~2MB
Contacts: ~2MB

Once you open and close apps some of it resides in memory to allow for quicker acces in the future. So now after a fresh boot and navigating around the phone and opening contacts, messaging, NM email list, calendar and the apps mentioned previously I am down to 58MB free. This is on an FP1 device.

What additional RAM is taken up by FP2 feature and the touch interface on S60v5? Then the widgets on top of that. In the N97's defense NM is bundled with the firmware and this may be part of the memory consumption but it shouldn't get worse once it's running. On most devices you need to add NM as a separate app and it is memory intensive.

I will wait a little longer to draw a conclusion as to whether it will perform adequately. I know Nokia can improve on this and I would think we'd see a little more than 55MB free once optimized but we'll have to wait and see.

EDIT: One question that should be asked is how much RAM the E75 has free on booth since it comes with FP2 and NM installed. This will help us understand a bit more about the RAM consumption.

And also, I've never had any RAM issues on the E71 so while I'm concerned about the N97 I think Nokia can make this phone perform adequately.
