*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia N97

Just came back from a lunch break at the Nokia NYC Flagship store. They do have the N97 for sale and it's only the black one.

The rumor first 50 buyers getting a discount on Symbian-Freak.com is not true. Some idiot also posted there's a special sale fomr 8:30-10am when the store is not even open. And if you buy from the flagship store, you don't even get the free bluetooth as advertised on the nokiausa.com website.

The production model looks and feels good. I'll go back a week later to see how well the display models withstand its daily abuse and see if the phone breaks down. lol...
 
How was the responsiveness? Can you feel the inadequate processor under the skin? The keyboard is concerning. Does it compare to the crappy keyboard on the N810? That thumb board was horrible for feedback and key travel.
 
Actually I think it should have it, because there is a T9 Keypad so that u can write texts without the QWERTY keyboard, so I believe it is the same thing that should pop up when you want to dial a number....anyone correct me if i'm wrong
 
I never really had that problem with any of the demand paging 128MB models. But then again since you can't actually open new browser windows in S60 (what a joke) I haven't really tested it.

But you are right in that even a single large web page can cause some issues on S60. The browser is one thing that closes on my phone and I wonder if it is because of memory or some stupid bug.

I really don't want to need to wonder such things in the future. In practice the iPhone browser has been more reliable and even if it should crash (which happened to me once) it loads right back up to where you left it. No loading lag, no hunting around in history, no BS. Just how a mobile device should behave.
 
Well to be honest 5800 has many good things about it too; it's been my main music player and it does a good job at it. With the way the music player works, I can't imagine getting to a certain track on a phone without touch screen. This is something I think only s60v5 can do. My perfect phone, however, would be something like a Treo, running s60, and with semi-qwerty rather than a full qwerty.

I've used full keyboards on E71, BlackBerry Curve, and G1. I just can't type fast with them, but I was blazing on the Pearl when I had it.
 
Nice I can't wait. I'm trying to see what phone to get next. Hopefully the N97 will be released and used supply will be plenty to pick from! Now I really can't wait until June
 
At home & work for certain. Lots of hot spots, but more for AT&T than T-Mo it seems.

That was my first plan. I love not having to worry about minutes... but to be stuck on EDGE when there isn't a hot spot around could be.... annoying.

Like a lot of here seem to I've hit a time where my addiction to new devices really has all but disappeared. The E90 IMO is still head and shoulders above most of if not all the newer devices and nothing since my Bold has done it for me.

I went for the Bold as found the E71 underwhelming and in the mean time the more i have got to know the Bold and discover all it's built in functionality the more i love it. I only recently fully discovered the power of Autotext that by typing just 4 letters enters a whole sentence for me for some of my repeated events and i haven't seen anything like that on any other device that comes close.

Unlike most it is easier for me to not be so impressed with some of the new devices as although my original PDA's and then UIQ where always Touch screen devices since i moved to S60 in June 2006 i am just not a Touchscreen fan any longer. I've tried an iPhone and hated so much of how it does things it only lasted a couple of days, recently i tried an X1 and that didn't even make it through 24hrs.

Again like many here i will wait and see via WOM how the N97 actually is in use before reaching any conclusions about it. Although i quite like the look of the Palm Pre I'm really not sure it offers anything my Bold doesn't already do and do well.

But i also don't think the N97 is going to be Nokia's premium device for 2009 either i think a true E90 replacement will take that honor and be shown within the first half of 2009 at the latest. I am however fairly confident that 2009 will be the year we finally see a shift towards The Cloud/Thin Client solutions and them beginning to gain ground and becoming more mainstream.

I have even taken the first steps towards this now myself having at long last set up Google Calender, Contacts and Mail and added GooSync to my Bold. I now no longer need to sync my Bold with my Computer just use GooSync from the Bold and let Google Calender sync with Outlook. Much quicker and a lot less hassle IMO.

I still don't see what the fuss is about. None of you have explained why you're so upset. Is it because you want Nokia to be at the forefront of cutting edge technology? Or are you afraid that the phone won't perform well?

I can understand if fanboys were crying if it was the former.

We can't really say anything about the latter until we get the phone now can we?
 
While it seems we're moving forward towards the device release date, I don't think anyone should get too excited until someone gets an email indicating their phone has shipped or their CC has actually been charged.
 
Ultimately that's more of a different policy/direction than anything. How long have we been hearing the iPhone rumors that were spot on the mark about this? At least 2-3 months, it seems like. Some of the more fantastic stuff didn't pan out, that's for sure.

Nokia's method of apparently dealing with leaks and rumor was to announce it and slowly give detail.

On the other hand, Nokia probably intended March-April instead of June-July, but were vague enough that they can still be "on target."

I never said the N97's camera is worse than the N95. The both suffer from having small sensors. Algorithms can only do much. For the over exposed areas you can't enhance what isn't there.

I would not buy the N97 just for its camera. If you need a camera just about any $100 point and shoot is going to give you better pictures than the N97. If the camera is the top priority your phone then I would wait for something better to come along from Samsung or Sony.
 
That's all fine, for you. It's awesome that it matches your needs perfectly and that you happened to snag it for $500. But you're not going to single-handedly account for Nokia's quarterly profits with one cell phone purchase off a glitch in their preorder system.

A lot of people don't care about the camera and/or a hardware keyboard and when you remove those elements, add a steep discount through a carrier, your average customer is going to prefer the $250 8mp cameraphone to the almost $600 unlocked N97. If not, they'll rule it out altogether based on price alone.
 
The last line of my post should've made it apparent that i'm not faulting just nokia for that. ;)

Maybe I did go a bit overboard but I don't think the lack of a solid black is going to stop people who want this phone for what it is from buying it, while new colors can spur new reasons for purchasing.
