*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia E71

yes with t9 phones like the n95, you can update the t9 library. actually it does automatically. it learns it if you type it in frequently, so you can add "ggm" or whatever. hell i've added CDMA, EVDO, HSDPA, to my t9 library just from posting on the forum.

Really?! Are you sure about that?! Name me 1, just 1 phone that has this same thickness (10 mm) and sports an authentic 3.5mm Jack?!!! I'm waiting?! Now, if you by chance DO get to mention 1 - find if it has AGPS, WiFi, quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and has 2 band 3G (diff. for specific markets). I Don't recall any such device.

Dude you don't even HAVE the device yet. You've spent nothing yet to be disappointed. Sure I'd like the 3.5mm jack as well, but the E71 & E66's sleekness is definately an elation.

Dude you work on the BES and you hate BB's? Ok give me your job, please, I love troubleshooting BB's and the BES. You have the N95 already no? What things on E-Series would you miss that the N-Series doesn't or will never have?

All of you out there who know the E71 better than I do - I was wondering if the E71 is able to do something automatically that the iPhone can do, and if so, how do I configure it to do so. I have Wi-Fi networks at home and at the office. I would like to get things set up on my E71 so that it will automatically join trusted Wi-Fi networks, automatically switching to that from my GPRS/Edge connection, and then back to Edge when I get out of range.

As I say, my iPhone does this seamlessly, but it would be great if I could get my E71 to do this as well...

Sorry dude. You're completely right. But it also helps us directly compare VERY similar competitors in this product space to better asses feature differences, pricing, launch dates, and what we REALLY want to do with either device.

Ordered mine on 7/1, it got to US Customs @ Oakland released it on 7/5 and unit was delivered 7/7 a.m. Should be quicker without the holiday & weekend.

People are ridiculous aren't they Carl?

Nokia gives them a bigger screen but wide body.. People complained about that!

Come on guys!! Its one way or another...

Want the bigger screen settle for the E61i or the E90.

Want a smaller QWERTY E71 is perfect by me..

The lack of wi-fi as well as the slower performance is bad enough. Then you have the E61i, which is even further removed from the E62.
I'll give you though that it was a lot cheaper than the E61/E61i, although it is debatable if what you give up (including the complete open nature of the normal devices and lack of AT&T contract) is not far too high...

The only real improvements done with the E62 were the mini-USB and headphone jack.

I on AT&T.

Currently I'm still using the Motorola V9x, and I really love that phone (especially the volume level since I am partially deaf)

However I just can't keep up with work lately with a non-qwerty keypad. So I need to find for the best smartphone out there with the qwerty keyboard and a loud headset.

If T-Mobile US brings on this with AWS, I'll extend my contract for another 2 years.

It Nokia is going to sell it unlocked/unbranded with AWS, I'll buy it as my next phone.

"the e66 & e71 are both s60v3fp1 with some new features back ported."
That would really suck. :( Just dont get why wouldnt they use fp2 with it. Oh well will probally pass it when ever it comes out if it really is missing fp2.

Thought at least there's something to wait again other than Nokia's TS :D

"There are qwerty devices coming which are not e but they are later."

to answer your question, yes without a doubt. even a basic user can pick up an n95, turn it on, and they can make calls with it, find the contacts, send a text message, etc. that's the whole point of s60 compared to windows mobile and other smartphone OS's. s60 bridges the gap between regular phones and smartphones. the menus, interface, input method, are all stolen right from a regular phone. but s60 can also multi task and install 3rd party apps. the only drawback is they would need to make the menu key HOME so its more self explanatory.

my related story: i sold my n75 to a friend who is clueless about phones. gave him the 20 minute tour, and he's only called a few times with questions. but he's smooth sailing now after only a day or so. and his questions were "how do i set mp3's to individual contacts." his last phone was a razr, and that's the only type of phone he's ever used. he also has no technical background or college degree, if that means anything.

where i agree with you is when dealing with anything that doesnt come with the phone out of the box. pull a new s60 phone out of the box, and its super easy for anyone to learn with a few pointers, i.e. long press for task manager. but adding apps, even google maps, is where it gets over people's head. like handy taskman is not an easy app to explain or have a new user obtain. but no doubt to use s60 with its out of box features is no brainer, anyone can do it.

Now that you mention it, I could see this as being Nokia's marketing strategy. Lets deny the existence of the 100 prototypes out there that are being reviewed, play ignorant, and drop the phone after 6 months for an expensive price
