*OFFICIAL THREAD: Nokia E71

Crossing my fingers now for shopblt to get them in stock wednesday. Hopefully i can get overnight shipping and have it thursday before I go out of town for the 4th of July weekend.

The text message notification box/bubble at the bottom of my E71's (2-NAM with original firmware) active standby screen (not the standard small one on the top right) seems to have stopped working. I've checked the settings and it is enabled.

It used to come up when a text (or texts) was received and if you highlighted it, it would give a preview of the texts received. I found it to be a convenient way to see who sent a text without opening the text.

Anyone have the same problem?

Just checked out the hands on video over on Engadget, freakin sweet! So its announced now from Nokia, finally, but still not available.

I'm waiting until they are readily available at several different locations...then I'll lurk around and see if the early adopters are wrestling with any bugginess or issues...

Not scared...just cautious. I almost bought an SE k850i the week that it hit...and that phone has turned into a major nightmare for many.

Menu => Tools => Settings => General => Security => Phone and SIM card => Keypad autolock period.

You ain't lookin' hard enough. S60 menu'ing is very convoluted. You'll get used to it.

Yeah, that is probably the most important consideration. (which is why I mentioned it at one point).

Or switching to T-Mobile. Getting Nights and Weekends on T-Mobile is a TON cheaper than on AT&T. You get it as part of your $1/day access fee on pay per day. You get it with any voice plan that costs at least $39.99/mo (contract or not). I think AT&T makes you pay $59.99/mo before you get Nights and Weekends. So, it actually is cheaper to get nights and weekends via prepaid on T-Mobile, than on contract (with T-Mobile or AT&T).

Yup. That is a huge annoyance factor for me.

Many ppl don't know this, or maybe they do I'm not sure. However BES works with SQL db's coinciding with Exchange. I read somewhere that on a Suse Linux Server, someone has MS Windows Server & some SQL server (not MS') & BES working all in tandem. I have NO CLUE how, but they've got it working.

Carl, that news regarding pre-orders is depressing me. Good that its that long away because I'll have enough to purchase the E71. Bad in 2 ways because the Bold will be available, and the wife's B-Day is too close for me to splurge on myself. I just hope I'm lucky enough to have both & a sweet present for my wife too ;).

man its been 2 days and i still cant find a way to display my text msg inbox on the homescreen as an active standby application like i used to have it on my e61i. no, not as a shortcut, but as an actual active plugin that used to show like the most recent 2 msgs from your inbox. anyone have luck with this or is it a removed feature?

I've been on the Blackberry Bandwagon for over a year now. I was disappointed when the 8300 didn't include both WiFi and GPS along with the camera, but that's life. I can compromise on WiFi as it's a nice feature but not killer for me. Or so I thought. More on that in a second.

What has always bugged me about the Blackberry is the calendar. It's weak. Pocket Informant is under development for the RIM OS but it's taking forever. I have no doubt it will be killer when it is finally available. But meanwhile, I miss the week-at-a-glance view that is so perfect for my level of scheduling. I had pinned my hopes on the 9000 series Blackberry to alleviate most, if not all, of my concerns, but there's trouble in paradise. Battery life on the 9000 with 3G is said to be disastrous so far. If the 9000 series rollout is delayed, the battery problem will most likely be the cause.

Another thing that's p!ssing me off about the Blackberry is lack of a good suite of programs for MS Office document compatibility. DataViz's Documents To Go is supposed to be released with the 9000, and it looks fantastic so far, but it's only going to be available to BES users, not the BIS like me. I'm beginning to fall out of love with my Blackberrys.

Coincidentally, I have been readying my burgeoning collection of Nokias for sale. I put each one back into service for a week or so, give it a thorough field testing, update the firmware, yadda yadda yadda, all to make sure that when I sell one of my Nokias I know it's exactly what I advertise. During this process I have fallen back in love with Symbian s60 and Nokia. My N95-1 is now the mobile I'm using daily, and getting rid of my others is a struggle. Maybe I'm going to sell my Blackberrys instead. :hehehe: I find myself connecting to my home WiFi network way more than I ever thought I would. As a T-Mobile user, EDGE is fair at best, pathetic at worst. But using WiFi is amazing. Handy Calendar has given me back the weekly view of an old paper datebook that I've come to love. The things I do miss about my Blackberrys is push email and a full QWERTY keyboard. Maybe I should give my E61i another shot. I guess the E71 is in my sights now.
