Official Thread: Nokia E5

the 9700 is not any faster, the viewing is better because of high res true, the added ram is a plus because, the 9700 wont slow to a crawl like the e72 when viewing huge websites. :buddies:

Hey Boxyyy, I went ahead and bought an E5 too. it should be here in a couple of days.

As far as the Email client using 3G instead of wifi. This is a known bug, I've seen it in the E72 and my current N86. You need an free app called Birdstep Smartconnect. Its in the OVI store. Just create a destination in Smartconnect with wifi as first priority and 3G as the 2nd priority.

I don't have real high expectations for the screen, but I'm hoping its not a huge factor.

The browser lag may just be an S60 thing. I will compare it side by side with my N86. The E5 should be faster, since it has a faster processor and more ram.

Your review of the camera concerns me, that may be the deal breaker.

Is the volume rocker on your E5 hard to push? I had read about this problem, and was hoping Nokia fixed it on later releases.

@mapajegio The sound quality is amazing. There is absolutely no disturbance (static) from wind, and the calls are crystal clear. I'm on AT&Ts 3G network in Vermont if that helps. Call volume is great too, I could hear my dad fine while in the middle of a group of chatty teenagers afterschool.. and my dad talks really really lightly when he's at work.
As for reception, I have no complaints. That probably has more to do with the carrier than anything, but reception is great for me currently on AT&T. I'm also going to be trying out a T-Mobile prepaid plan soon, I can let you know how the reception is on T-Mobile as well. Keep in mind I live in Vermont though.

The battery life is also great, a half charged battery (it came like that when the phone arrived) lasted me a full day before needing to recharge and I played a lot with the phone.

@Snotick Alright thanks for the tip about the app! I'll download it ASAP :)
The screen isn't that bad unless you're viewing a youtube video or looking at certain photoshopped pictures and such on Facebook etc etc. The screen gets pixelated sometimes.

Yeah I wasn't too happy with the camera. The fixed focus really kind of bugs me and the lighting is an issue. If you figure out a way to get great pictures while indoors in poor lighting please let me know! It might just be my inability to use a camera properly.

Yes, the volume rocker is a bit hard to push. Nokia didn't raise it out enough from the side of the phone, so you have to press it with a little bit of force to get it to go down, but it's not really a problem.

Update: So I realized that my phone already has Smartconnect installed (came with it), silly me. Anyways, I don't really know how to use it, mind helping me out? I mean the WLAN Wizard on my phone already allows me to prioritize my connections and everything, I have it so that all applications ask me what network to use. It's just the e-mail client will always, always go for the 3G connection.

E72 isn't worth it in my opinion as a mid to high end smartphone today, due to the rapidly shifting expectations in specs.

But repackaged as the E5 with killer battery life and set at these prices, I think its one hell of a value.

This would make a killer gift phone, or a business phone for tight company budgets.

This is coming from a guy that defines High End through the type of screen of a mobile device..

Yes, the processor of the 9700 makes it faster so as the E72 as they both have the same amount of processing speed.

Which would I rather take?

High Res screen with a crappy browser

OR

QVGA low res screen with a good browser

I would want the High Res screen, but the crappy browser would turn me off. (I don't even want to hear "I use Opera or Bolt" That just makes the E72 much better as doesn't need 3rd Party app to have worable browser.)

QVGA low res screen and fast browser. Its workable for me.

So it really comes down on which is important to the user.. I choose the browser!

IIRC, Smart Connect is needed because the email app doesn't work with the built in destinations.

Its hard to explain the way the screen looks, if you've been using 16 million color screens and switch to one of the 256k screens, it just looks washed out.

I bought an N82 off ebay a couple weeks ago, the seller stated that the camera was faulty, but everything else was fine. When I turned the phone on, I knew the screen had been replaced with a cheap knock off. I took some pictures of my Silver N82, that I have owned since new, along side the Black N82 with the cheap screen. The E5 is the same quality as the Black N82's.

I just found it difficult to adjust to the screen.

Just to be clear: the screen is just one of many factors that defines what sort of category a device slides into. And I'll follow that up with a question: Name me one high end device that ships with a QVGA screen from anyone other than Nokia. Just one.

Personally, I think the S60 browser is utter crap anymore. I use Opera Mini on both S60 and BB. And I'll take OM + a high res screen over QVGA anyday.

E71 lacks USB charging and a 3.5mm jack (the significance of which is not to be underestimated

though i've never had to opportunity to do an apples-apples power comparison, the 9700 reportedly has much better battery life (feel free to tell me if i'm wrong)

Boxyyy, sorry I missed your update about Smartconnect. I just received my E5 a few hours ago, and have been messing around with it. To set up Smart connect, just open the app, select options, select new group. From there you name the group whatever you want. I usually name mine "Any". You can then choose if you want it to stay connected on better connection or change. I think this means that it will switch from 3G to wifi, if wifi is available and in range. I leave Destination=same as group name. This means that smart connect will create a destination called "Any" for me. After you have your group set up, you select it and add access points. I have mine set up to use my home wifi 1st, then my parents, and then my brothers, and then 3G. You can add more later, or delete some if you don't use them anymore. When your all done, you can select Options > Advanced > Settings. I change notification level to None. This keeps the Smartconnect banner from showing up at the top of the screen each time it connects. I turn off prompt on new connection. And I enable GPRS Roaming.

That should be everything. I then go into settings for my email and select access point, it will now show "Any" as a destination. I only use smartconnect for email. I let the normal destinations on the phone handle everything else.

Now that I've had the phone, I did notice a few things.

1) the phone feels and looks really good. Its not as heavy as the E72, since its made with more plastics. There is still enough stainless steel to make it feel solid.

2) the screen is ok, not the best. I mainly notice it when viewing the phone at an angle.

3) oddly enough, one of my favorite apps from my N97 has showed up. Active Notes. Not sure if Nokia is going to release this app for older phones. I wanted it for my N82, but couldn't find a working version for S60V3 fp2. (I will start another thread to see if someone knows how to pull the file from the E5)

4) My volume rocker is also awkward, not sure if its just hard to push, or if its because they aren't raised enough.

I look forward to testing the battery and camera in the next few days.

Now your contradicting your self.. Didn't you say in your opinion you don't think the E72 is high end because its QVGA 320x240.

high end device that ships with a QVGA screen from anyone other than Nokia.

Which I agree with you.. Despite of it being QVGA screen, I think it can still hang with the high end bad boys of messaging IMO.

I am also in the same page as to wanting more higher resolution. But it is what it is..

The device is still workable and I can get a lot of rich productivity. Such as download 10 - 15MB size of PDF docs.

For you is utter crap and I respect that opinion.. but for me its not and it works. at least it doesn't pissed me off like the one on the 9700, that it pisses me off whenever I see a shared link on twitter which I know the 9700 is going to crap in loading the page.

I will take a High Res screen, 256MB RAM, and the S60 browser and its heaven.

IMO.. :)

no, i don't. i have absolutely no first hand experience with the E72, i'm just going off of what i've read on this forum...

i've tried setting it up from the NM website, from NM on the phone, and i've tried setting up an entire new NM account....no dice on any of them. either "mid-april" was a pipe dream or they've done nothing with it

the problem is that when i enter this particular email address and password, NM tries to connect for several minutes, but then says that it cannot connect to the server. if i enter a dummy address, it'll tell me that it cannot connect but then it gives me the option to manually enter my settings, but it will NOT let me change the dummy email address.....so basically yeah, it looks like you understand the issue

yep, an improvement in my email problem alone would swing the balance back towards nokia

boring situations call for boring games, i guess ;)

i'm looking at solitaire apps out on the marketplace generally....most of my app-angst predates the ovi store. there are a lot of (dare i say, most of?) great apps that aren't in the ovi store catalog....ovi store does have a big redeeming factor, however, and that's that their prices are significantly lower for the same apps than other sites

Sigh. I said the screen is "one of many factors". Read it above.

For the record, the E72 is lacking RAM and the screen sucks. That's pretty much undebatable. The E5 is going to be a much better buy.
