"Non-stop action!"

I never understand why this tag line is used to sell movies...because frankly it puts me right off.

Because it basically says 'there is no story, it's just a sequence of stunt scenes, car chases and shootouts etc strung together over 2 hours'

If a movie was literally non-stop action, it would be a complete bore.

Maybe if you are 5 years old, then non-stop action is ok...you have no sense of discernment and just to see images flickering in front of you is entertainment enough. That's why kiRAB love cartoons.

But I always worry when tag lines emphasise the action sequences over the story.

DepenRAB on the circumstances. I rarely go to the cinema but when I do it is usually with a group of guys and it's usually a gross-out comedy or all action film.

Those films suit the group. If I want to watch an emotional drama or epic then it will probably be at home.

I once tried to get them to watch a Kevin Smith film and they just didn't get it. Too much dialogue

I agree with what you say, sometimes you are in the mood for a bit of silliness, you watch a film with a bunch of mates and a silly action movie may be just what you are in the mood for.

For example, movies like Crank and Shoot Em Up fit that 'non stop action' bill, but they at least don't pretend to be serious thrillers, and have a sense of their own absurdity...and can be all the more enjoyable for it.

But what prompted me to start this thread was seeing that tag line on an advert for Eagle Eye.

I had heard early word that it was a very good conspiracy thriller, but having seen that tag line and the trailer, and heard more detailed reviews it now does indeed seem to be a series of setpieces/chases/gun battles etc strung together.

It's kind of put me off seeing it.

I can relate to that - I have a friend that has very...middle-of-the-road, popular taste in movies, and trying to get him to watch something like that is impossible.

He just does not seem to get subtelty, understated humor or anything that is primarily dialogue based. He will just sit there stony faced and start pulling faces, so you end up taking it off.

If it says non-stop action, Blu-Ray sales and cinema ticket sales will go up.

Also, the kind of people who love that kind of thing will buy into it, because "non-stop action" is another way of saying "blockbuster", or "popcorn movie".
