Nokia's answer regarding N93 NSU update problems....

Ok, for some time now firmware V20 for the N93 has been held back, Nokia finally gave an answer: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=5886

Dear Updaters

There has been much talk and speculation about the Nokia N93 and the Nokia Software Updater, so here are the facts.

N93 release V2.0 was first made available to the public on 16 October. We monitor update statistics and noticed an unacceptably high number of potential update failures being reported. This was also matched by a high number of posts in these boards about customers claiming to have problems and some ending up with devices which could not be switched on again.

These two factors meant our only option was to disable the product temporarily while investigations took place - that was on 3 November, and our investigations are still continuing. There are technical differences between updating using Nokia Software Updater and updating in a service point - the only problems are updating with NSU.

We are studying ways to rectify the situation in a satisfactory manner, and hope to be able to offer software updates for the N93 in early 2007.

We apologize for the inconvenience, frustration and disappointment caused.

Regards
The Nokia Software Update team

I highlighted the things that I found interesting.
So updates will be available in early 2007. I did find it interesting that they say: "There are technical differences between updating using Nokia Software Updater and updating in a service point - the only problems are updating with NSU.

They also said they monitored and had seen that there are many failures, I wonder if they meant looking in these forums.
Intersting piece of text and it does clear things a bit.

i got a sugestion for them...why dont they make it a downloadable file as an installer (or what ever will work). so all we have to do is put that installer file on the memory card or phone memory, and start the installer. i think that will solve most of the problems!!

I agree, and they are doing something about it.
Funny how they think the problem relates to NSU itself and not the "loose connection" or "unreliability" of the cable itself.

No update >>> Bricked phone. I agree. Well dont worry guys, you wont miss much. It makes N93 more efficient(w/ version 20) but nothing that you cant live without. Though it never crashed since except a fault in SmartMovie, which is not due to N93 itself.

So basically, now a phone can get bricked due to incorrect settings in the phone, bad cable, bad connectors AND even the NSU. Not a very reliable process if you ask me.

It sure is risky. This isn't my first thread about this issue, the process is simply way to risky, even Nokia Service CEnter sometimes bricks phones. I blame it on the cable....
Now Nokia is saying that it's NSU

I don't understand why they don't just add FOTA (Firmware over the air) to all these phones and get it over with.

I think the whole process is so ****** because they don't want you to have the firmware files. They should just let users download the files on their desktop and then the NSU should use the local copy to upgrade.

I think it'd better if they made a symbian app that could update the firmware. Transfer the entire f/w file to the phone via usb/BT/IR and then run the app on the phone to upgrade.

That is a good alternative, but FOTA eliminates the need for any machinery, cables or add-ons.
So FOTA to me seems ideal, and I don;'t understand what is taking them so long to do this.

Are there any Service Points in North America that can do the update? A representative of the New York City Nokia flagship store told me on Dec. 8th that they could not perform the update because they had not received the proper adapters.

They need to just let us update our FW straight from the phone.

My psp can upgrade its FW through a wifi connection flawlessly...if sony can do it, nokia can most certainly do it -

There's a good chance that nokia will never do it since they don't want their f/w out in the public domain. FOTA is the other best alternative which nokia should really have enabled by now.

Some people complain about how long it takes NSU to download firmware packages using their PCs. Downloading firmware OTA for a S60 phone takes a lot of time too, and drains the battery more before the crucial flashing phase of the update.

S40 firmware is smaller so that could be faster for FOTA.

Hi all,
Well having read this this news 2 days ago i phoned my local service centre to see if they had it available yet and to my delight they did. I will admit i am lucky as it is only a 5-10minute drive from me, so i dropped my phone in yesterday morning and 4 long hours later had it back.

The improvements are evident as soon as you turn it own start up is now much faster and opening any app is instantaneous to early to really say anything else yet but so far all looks good to me. Using the camera no longer ends with the front camera activated and switching to Landscape mode is without delay or lag. IMO if you can make to a Service Centre it is well worth the trip, also since i have been using the AD-46 with it when trying to use the Data cable the connection is not great or stable. As i sync via Bluetooth it is not used that often but am worried updating at home may brick my phone so for me it's the Service Centre for all future updates until we get FOTA.

mayby this is why nokia's working on the n95 and not releasing it untill q1 2007...cuse most of the people who got to play with it said its stable, but who knows...theres a heated discusion on this problem over at http://discussions.europe.nokia.com!!
