Nokia N8 Pre-Ordre starts today USA

the only problem here is that we (americans) add tax after the fact, so it's $549 plus tax, while in europe VAT is already included

For the most part, Amazon (and Dell) only stocks one color for each Nokia device. The only other time that I've seen differently is for the E71, when both the gray and white keyboard colors were available. And that's about it.

Sure, due to its penta band RF radio, you can likely buy an N8 from overseas and import it. Of course, the huge downside is that if you get a defective device or you're just not happy with it, you're stuck with it, no returns/refunds. And from what I hear Dell's return service isn't great; you get hit with a return and re-stocking fee. Stick with Amazon and Newegg.

Do you understand how NM works? It's a man in the middle push service, similar to BIS, that uses their servers to push messages to your device. Their servers only hold the last 250 messages from your account on their servers to push. Your phone will store more but their servers only keep the last 250. It used to only be 3 days worth of email so they've improved this. Also, NM syncs your read status back to your device, which still isn't working on BIS, at least not with Gmail. Does BIS sync sent items back to your device like NM does? There are pros and cons to each. BB doesn't sync your whole inbox to the device either but since I've never used one I can't say how much data is stored and if you have access to it all with server search. And BB limits the email size and attachment size that you can send where NM doesn't.

If you want your whole inbox, the set up an IMAP connection using the same Nokia email client. Why all the *****ing and hostility?

EDIT: BIS stores 30 days worth of messages on their server. After 30 days they are deleted from the server but are still on your device. Once they are deleted from the server then you are not able to forward or reply to these messages that may be still on your device. BIS 3.1 has a 5MB total message size limitation. With NM you can still respond and forward messages that are still on your device even if they aren't still on Nokia's server.

Well, considering the new CEO, and a possibility of yet another left-turn strategy change, one would have to reconsider the N8. Is Symbian 3 (and 4) pretty much now a dead end platform?

I guess we'll see over the coming months. They could also become HTC, i.e. platform agnostic. My suspicion: next to Symbian phones, Nokia is also going to be shipping WP7 devices.

Again, why?

1. So what? Is there some rule that says a device can work on another US carrier's GSM network but not their 3G network? Everyone sells quad band GSM.
2. Samsung had to remove their camera because the iPhone has one? Or because AT&T hates front cameras? Perhaps with the iPhone having a camera Nokia could tell AT&T to shove it with an N8 option for the carrier.

The irony here is that Nokia has had the same stance as Apple when it comes to device crippling for the carrier. Nokia did it initially with the E62 but none of their higher end stuff. Apple was able to hold their own and demand that the device be unbranded and to sell it as they envisioned. How different would the mobile landscape be if Nokia had been able to sell Symbian devices unbranded through the carriers? How different would the app markets be? I'm not saying that it would have diminished Apple's entrance with their whiz bang UI and large screen but perhaps there'd be better developer support. Or course maybe Symbian Signed would have scared everyone off anyway and we'd still be in the same place.

I'm conflicted in the sense that I'd like to see the Symbian ecosystem flourish which will require carrier support for the devices in order to provide the type of demand that would lure developers. But I'm rather attached to my $15 unlimited/tethered data plan. If the N8 comes to AT&T crippled (maybe an N8x similar to E71x versus E71) then we'd still have the option for an unbranded/unlocked device.

i am not so sure. a lot of msft execs are not beholden to the mothership after they leave. I think they could become platform agnostic and try to become like HTC. Now isn't that a kick in the rear? Big daddy NOK trying to "be like" the much smaller much nimbler HTC?

Amazon IMO is waaaaaay worse than Dell.

Dell Business is not that bad at all. I've never had a problem, and Newegg is good to. Amazon is a joke. Once they get your money it's a PITA dealing with them.

I only deal with them if there is no other option...

Sure with contract. What are you going to do anyway, buy it unlocked and try to use a GSM iPhone on Verizon's CDMA network?

Or hop on T-Mobile and use it on Edge? What would be the point?

Anyway on the N8, wait a few months until pricing is cut down. By January, you should see it for $350-$400 on Amazon.

You don't want to buy this on launch anyway; it'll have buggy firmware, like most current Nokias and it'll come with the S60v5 browser. They're not releasing the new browser until some time in December, with a 'promised' firmware update.

Because AT&T makes rules. Apple can`t release IPhone for any other carrier as long it is in contract with AT&T. Apple is much more important to AT&T then Nokia so Nokia has to play by the AT&T rules, that means IPhone is top smartphone on network . Nokia should release to T-Mobile it is much friendlier to phone manufacturers.
This is how carrier system works in the USA , you play by their rules or you are out.
