Nokia N8 Pre-Ordre starts today USA

Hunh. So, simulated dolby 5.1 sound coming from your phone is the new thing you need to have, more important than a stable phone, with a really nice mobile browser that doesn't crash or take an eternity to render a page or spew 'out of memory' errors?

Well, alrighty then *rolls eyes*.

The fact that the N8 is launching with the same S60v5 browser is kind of a joke, no? The tech press is going to tear it a new a**-hole.

Amazon took back two N86s from me when the phone was released, and it was dead simple and quick each time.

I'd personally recommend them, not to mention they don't charge tax for most people.

question is, are these US Nokia N8? i only ask because used to be, you had to return the phone to country of origin if you had warranty repair--is this still the case? or did the other companies' policies force nokia to change their mind? (if you bought an iphone from lets say hong kong or the philippines and it malfunctions while you are in the US, you can take it to the apple store)

I've used BLT before as well, they are good. They are showing ETA 09-26-2010, which is very good i think. And they have white silver : )

LOL, I'm really thinking of moving over to the N8 from my iPhone 3G, but this one damn app has me addicted! Im sure when the time comes (ie the price is lowered a bit) I'll have no problems making the switch, but right now I need an app like that for Symbian!! I've e-mail the "words" people with no reply..... ;)

This thread has deteriorated into an apple...att or whatever thread...i guess we have to wait for the N8 to ship, so we can hear from the early adopters

Amazon, I've had good experiences with. Dell, I've just read about. Thanks for the heads up; will stay away from them even more now (NOBODY should be buying Dell computers anyway, they've been making nothing but garbage with failing motherboards over the last few years. They're worse than Acer.).

With todays smartphone market growing like crazy its not smart for nokia to put a device at 550 range. they should worked a deal with att and t-mobile like google and sell it for cheaper at contract. when you can buy a htc hd2 @ 350 range and run windows mobile and android with froyo seems more appealing to some people. I really want this phone but seems in 6 months from now this phone will be nothing but 2009 tech.

Add my N85 to the list. If my fiancee and I are in an area with low service, my phone shows 0 bars and her Nokia 5610 will show 2 (and she can still make calls). It's taken me over a minute to get service after getting out of some elevators. Not to mention that it appears the phone keeps on looking for a signal when it's in offline mode (battery drains in 6 hours or so, sucks trying to listen to music on a plane).

I bought my Nokia because of all the talk about how powerful the OS is. Great, it's really powerful but no one develops for it. What can symbian do that Android or iOS can't? I can brag about how my car has 2000 horsepower but it's pretty useless without an accelerator and steering wheel.

How many times has Nokia told their fanbase that the next iteration was going to fix the ills of the previous model? Have they succeeded with this at all? They said they're going to emphasize S3 but they're still pushing out S1 devices (C6, C7, etc). I've completely lost faith in their abilities and really have no reason to believe that they can deliver a solid product based solely on their word.

I want to hit the purchase button at Shopblt, until I read this

N8-00 LIGHT GREY 12MP CAM 3.5IN SCR 16GB HDMI WLAN GPS UNLOCKED GSM
No Returns Or Exchanges.

There is no need to disparage the N8 by making up nonsense when there is enough to complain about without doing so.

The 5.1 that comes out of the N8 is real Dolby Digital Plus. If you have the content (ostensibly a DVD or BR rip with a 5.1ch audio track?) and a 5.1 channel surround sound system, you will get real 5.1 channel Dolby Digital sound. It's not simulated. I don't know what there is to complain about with regards to the N8's ability to portably playback 720p HD media - I think this is very cool and I know I would use it because I find myself wishing I had it today. What device on the market can provide this functionality at the moment?

You also cannot fairly say anything about out of memory errors because you've never seen the phone in operation. I've seen one demo of the N8 with an out of memory error and that was probably six months ago on very early software - never since then. Running out of memory was have been the least of the user's concerns with software at that state. Is it possible that the 256MB memory and S^3's demand paging is enough? Why not wait and see instead of just tossing out tired cliches?

As for the browser, that's a real issue and one that Nokia deserves a shellacking for. Nokia's current browser is pretty decent in terms of its ability to render faithfully, but it hasn't really advanced whereas page content and user demands have, plus it's brutally slow. What have they been doing for 1.5-2 years that they couldn't manage to deliver a new Qt browser with a major OS milestone? Beats me but they're stupid. Then again, you can just install Opera. It's not like you don't have choices.

What's a little more upsetting is the incomplete multitouch implementation. Wow, so you can pinch and zoom in the browser and pictures. The only reason anyone uses this "meh" gesture is because Apple once advertised it like it came out of Jesus's behind and it somehow became prerequisite. How about a multitouch keyboard, so you can hold down the shift key? Way to go with prioritizing, there, Nokia.

You could make a lot more complaints too. The pre-order price is just one of them. The point is that the N8 will have its quirks out the door but then so does every single phone on Earth. If you think the device's features minus its quirks put it beyond redemption or that the price is unreasonable, then don't buy it. By another that suits your preferences. Or wait until the software is updated and re-evaluate then. If the issues aren't a big deal to you and you simply "need" it now, then by all means, spend more than it ought to cost buying it. If you want it but not at any cost, then wait. You will be rewarded with better software and pricing.

Point is that you don't need to make stuff up.

Not only expensive with the "pre order", but you'll also be the last to get yours.
Nokia really needs to get a clue and fix it one way or another. Either discount the "pre order" since you won't get it first, or make it cheap enough to be worth waiting for.

The present system is stupid...
