Nokia N8 Pre-Ordre starts today USA

So if this report of a delay is true..why hasn't Nokia come out with an "official" word..such as what Apple does with their releases? Even if there is truly a delay, I doubt nokiausa.com would change the availability date..I believe the end of Sept would simply come and go

In the U.S., the only option to check out a Nokia phone, IS to buy it. That's why the preferred method is Amazon, who have a pretty decent return policy.

I think the point was that AT&T is likely able to detect what phone you're using as soon as you slip in the SIM card. You'll get one of those notifications text messages on your phone: "It appears you're using a smartphone. We're automatically upgrading you to our new data plans..." etc. etc.

If Nokia is playing nice now with the carriers, it's possible they'll have the IMEI.

In effect, it'll take away the biggest reason to buy unlocked. Seriously, if that's the case, I may as well go back on contract and get an iPhone or something, if I'll be paying the same amount.

Good specs on the paper, but how easy to use them & how useful to an average consumer? UI is the big driver these days.. no one will buy if the UI is not user friendly. The phone is not out yet, so you can't talk about the "phone" performance now. Let's keep the discussion to price at this time. If you are talking about my ip4, I am able make calls regardless of how I hold it ;)

I realize that...but how many actually return it after buying it..other than a warranty issue..i would venture to say maybe 0.1% or so...

Well keep it in perspective. Apple phones are typically outdated (mid-model refresh with double memory, etc) after 6 months with an entirely new phone every year (and obsolete in 2 years). I'm still happy with my N97 after 14 months. It's not inconceivable that many people could be happy with their N8 going into 2013 or so, just like you still have people strutting the N82 that came out in 2007. Phones with xenon flash and high end cameras still look to be few and far between.

Sorry, what I mean to say is that there is no device in the market that is for all intents and purposes a portable media PC. You cannot connect your iPhone to a TV without some proprietary intermediary device. If you want VGA out, for example, you can apparently use the iPad accessory, but then you only get 1024x768. You can use the Apple component breakout cable but then it's only 480p. And, of course, there's no surround.

What the N8 does is quite cool. It's a really portable media PC.

Apple has the app store and their support to save their product from failing if it wasn't for the app store their phone would be nothing. Now nokia on the other hand their app store its nothing compared to android or apple Nokia still in this shadow that their not able to see that the market its wayyy more competitive than what it was 3 4 years ago. You no longer have to wait around for their next flagship device when you have all this companies crushing eachother every other month.

Nokia has the best "phone" performance than any other company. Nokia has pioneered almost all GSM and 3G technology so this is one category that Nokia always delivers. UI is the issue but that want change until S^4/MeeGo. And I agree price should be around $450, $549 is a bit too high.

Did Steve sand you a free Bumber?

Motorola isn't making any thing official with the GSM like they did with the Droid. They are currently ''looking into'' an upgrade but they've been saying that for a while.

Many boards are concerned that 2.2 might not appear until Milestone 2. The only hope they have is a German Tweet that translates that maybe an upgrade will come in September, but that's all they currently have...
