Nokia E61 upgrade firmware like N80?

mmm... well it's kinda like the position i'm in. my phone was purchased in NY, and i got what i believe to be a spanish keyboard. i have installed traditional chinese/english on the phone. when i input chinese - i don't have a problem because the strokes input only requires me to use 5 keys (QWEAS). when i input eng, however, the symbols (blue ones) remap, even though i've tried to keep my firmware as 0529664 Euro-E1 Silver (default).

however, this is LITTLE problem for me, to be honest. when i do need to use symbol, i just click that key at bottom righthand corner ("Car" or "Chr"), and it'd work just fine. one extra step, but too trivial to complain, really.

so either way, only your symbols change. does this answer your question?

Same here. Cingular blue, bad reception. Seems that the phone is bad at chosing which network to connect to, and the interface does not let you select much. My old motorola let you set the home network preference and edit the list of preferred networks. I wish S60v3 did that too.

I'm in the bay area btw.

Any info on doing this when you get a chance would be GREATLY appreciated by a lot of us frustrated by the "cannot sort by first, last due to english/asian firmware" folks.

Thanks very much in advance.

Ok. First thing I had to do was to locate the valid released nokia firmware images. I finally found them via this thread: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=295174&page=4&highlight=E61

You'll eventually see that someone posted the images as a .rar file (split in three parts) here:

h**p://rapidshare.de/files/20784474/E61_RM-89_01_1_.0_106100404.part1.rar
h**p://rapidshare.de/files/20778824/E61_RM-89_01_1_.0_106100404.part2.rar
h**p://rapidshare.de/files/20779180/E61_RM-89_01_1_.0_106100404.part3.rar

Download and assemble the .rar files (they're big - 217MB). Run the executable - it will install the phoneix e61 product files.

Next, I used the prior mentioned thread: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=913725 and eventually
found http://nokia.dogtoe.com . I followed the dogtoe instructions to the tee.

Be sure to note what variant you have currently installed in case you want to revert back. I scanned product, it found my E61 then selected the 523307 Euro-A Silver v01 variant which has English & Nederlands as the available languages... incidently it is the second smallest variant.

I am working on a chart (there are 36! variants to choose from). I have tried all but two of the APAC variants. I'll post it later when I have a chance. I have to leave now.

Good luck... this should get most of you going.

Oh, one more thing. I flashed about 6 different variants testing out the various languages. At one point there was a problem in phoenix complaining about not being able to 'change to normal mode'. I solved this by inserting my sim card and trying again. I have successfully flashed it many times with/without the sim card.

Worked fine for me - and I can tell you that Euro-J is Polish/German as that is the phone I have. Nice to have the keyboard match the firmware too

Oh, and the First/Last Name issue has gone away.

Now to try some other firmwares

so is there a way to install a language pack without flashing the firmware? and if so where could i find this becuase i have searched high and low with no luck

Well, I made the mistake of updating my phone with the new EURO firmware from Nokias site, and now I can't flash it back to its original state. Is there any fix for this yet? It is stupid cause now i have ARABIC caracters and my keypad is all wrong.

Thanks, therevenge!
I have collected all the files necessary to flash my E61. Any idea which firmware version corresponds to my keyboard? (see attached)

Firmware Files:
rm89_m128_h20_ks_prod_106100404_c00_combined.bin
rm89_m128_h20_ks_prod_106100404_v07_variant.bin

What kind of charset (keyboard layout) and what was the language of the firm when it was out of the box?
Just to know what to search, I really have no idea of what fw version do u need.
