Nokia E61 upgrade firmware like N80?

The thing is that I don't know the out-of-the box info. I bought it online, the box is Chinese. It came with '3 Mobile' branding so I paid a guy 30 bucks to remove the branding. (I know now that it is something I could have done myself)

He did so by just slapping on a new FW. The first time out, I got it back brand-free I noticed that the QWERTY layout had changed - to German, I think. So, I took it back and had him (after a little yelling) put some other firmwares on it. He hasn't been able to put the correct firmware on the phone. At this point, I'm using the phone with the settings that are the most functional. Almost all of the buttons work.

The attached quote mentions 36 variants and a chart. If I had that, I'd be set.
Worse comes to worse, I'll have to do a trial-and-error to get this working.
 
Now that the official nokia updater has the e61 listed, do you think it recognizes which keyboard we have and downloads the appropriate settings? Im fairly certain I have the spanish keypad as these are the only odd characters: ? ? ? .....other than that its pretty straight forward...
 
hi there i have a nokia e61 variant, product code 0538289 running the older firmware.

i changed the product code on the handset using a program, to the european version, ran nokia updater again and it found updates!!!

this is the easy way to update firmware, i didnt go ahead and flash the phone using the nokia web updater as i wasnt sure the euro one had the same keyboard layout as mine had!

i have the uk keyboard, with the symbosl - + + on the I O P keys.
also i have ! " & on the Q W E keys... the product code i have is 0538289 uk country variant.

what product code should i change my e61's product code to to ensure my keyboard mapping stays the same?

is there any uk e61 variants with the uk keyboard with a product code other than 0538289? or is 0538289 the only one?

just for info i flashed using the nokia web updater program a 3 uk locked nokia 6680 , to the generic unlocked simfree firmware version, just by changing the product code on the 6680!
 
What is the difference from the old 1.0610.04.04 and the newer firmware? Will it speed my phone up at all? I would like to try it but am leary if it's neccessary? Please any input would be greately appreciated.
 
hi pls help, i want to have chinese text input ( for SMS) for my E61, alot of those posted sites are already down, can someone pls help or guide me through on where to download and where to read on how to make my E61 type chinese. thanks
 
sure thing - just refer to here. and also, when you say "chinese", you need to be specific in whether it's SIMPLIFIED or TRADITIONAL chinese. their variants number are different, and information to which can be found via google. good luck.
 
Join the thread because I haven't update my fw yet and I have the product code 0524755 and it has simplified chinese version.

I am too interested on the upgrade and wants to know which is the proper fw for to match the keypad.

Any tips guys?

flashed mine to a few different versions, all worked great.
I did not really need to change anything as I don't mind that its Last Name. First Name., so I flashed it back to the original to preserve all keyboard functionality.
I am just glad to know that I can upgrade it myself when a new firmware is released.
