Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

I just got a 5800XM NAM. I want to use Virtual Keyboard but I can't get the app signed through Symbian signed.

Can anyone here help me with it? Thanks.

I found a site called boxwave.com, and they have a snap on case for the 5800. Also, I really don't want to use a screen protector where you have to make it wet (like the zagg ones), I would much prefer a static type.

I have this problem since 3.0 and 4.0 upgrade still does not solve it for me. My home screen has a blank line across the screen where email notification and display should be. The email notification display worked only for a very short period of time after I purchased the phone. Since then, it is just a blank line which does react on touch but does nothing no matter how I set the email notification (on/of, auto retrieve, etc.) I went through hrs of trying all kind of settings but the blank line is still there and is very frustrating. I search the Nokia forum and it seems that people remove the blank line by hard reset the device (three-button reset). Now my question is whether someone has solve the problem without hard reset. If I have to hard reset the device, is there a way to back up all *apps* and *settings* to restore the device to the same condition as before? I have accumulate over the time a number of apps and settings that would take me hrs of manual restore, not to mention download and password reset, etc.Thanks.

Yeah there looks to be a delay from each app reading the true info from the OS. But in the end the numbers are fluctuating between, lets say 6 and 7 in google maps, and then 6 and 7 in the location app, it means one is just not catching up to display fast enough. And like i said i have a screen shot somewhere showing 11 in google maps cause i was surprised to find than many at the time.

Anyway someone seemed to have the wrong version installed? You'll get the exact one from www.google.com/gmm right from the phone browser.

does anyone know how to kill an open app. Before you would hold the menu key and highlight the app that you wanted to kill and then hit the c key to close the app. I can't find a way to kill an app with the 5800 yet. my manual is at home too. thanks

lol i'm not even trying to argue really. i don't even know why they are complaining. we already know that NAM variants are the black sheep. we are lucky that they even threw us a bone to chew on. you're not supposed to expect for anything else but to use the phone and the warranty.

Actually, you have that backwards. It has it within the native OS (so list menus have Kinetic), but not within most applications (like the web browser).

I agree that Kinetic is mostly a gimmick within the phone's functions, but it would be nice in the browser (which, ironically, is where it doesn't work at the moment).

That's nonsense. It has nothing to do with resistive vs capacitive. It's implemented in software and has nothing to do with the hardware (other than the phone simply being fast enough to support it).

Yea, the new keyboard function is very, very nice! Samsung phones have had that for years. Nice that Nokia has finally implemented it.

It makes the screen behave as if it has mass. If you do a swipe to move the on-screen page or list it will continue to move after you release, gradually slowing down until it stops. The faster you swipe, the faster and farther it will move before stopping.

Currently it is only supported within the phone's native OS, and only in "list" views.

If you want to get a feel for Kinetic scrolling, try the Skyfire browser, it has a somewhat rough implementation.

I went through this song and dance back when I figured out my campus had a wireless network. I had the E61 then and had the same login issue even though I was connected with the key. Of course, port 80 was the only thing blocked, most of the others were WIDE OPEN. Lots of fun doing linux assignments while walking around campus :)
