Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

I ordered one last week from dell which I got for a total of $240 free shipping and tax included. i bought one around 2 months ago from amazon at the $369 price with $50 rebate but I returned it a few days later. For $240 I'm willing to give this phone another try. My e71 is my main phone that use all the time but it's starting to get a little beat up from work and I'm looking to just pop my sim in a cool fun phone that does much of the same. I was using a 2g iphone for that but I'm tired of the slow edge data etc...
 
Clear masking tape is what I used. I have very little gap (sent one back to dell that was worse) and mainly covered it up to prevent dust from getting in there. All 5800s have some varience of it. Its just like the n95 slider issue, but this is easier to live with and fix.
 
i never really used those small speakers, but i'm sure you can find a bunch of them online somewhere. i normally just use computer speakers if i have to.
 
Does anyone else notice the battery meter difference when using handy shell compared to std homescreen? If im in the HS home screen i'll show 2 bars, then go to std home screen and show 3 bars.

Does anyone know the best application or theme to download for a dialer that has alphabets (alpha-numeric?).

Would I be able to use only the dialer from a theme if I'd like to keep my existing default theme?
 
Yes it does. NAM is much behind the Euro firmware. The .101 firmware is said to be buggy, the .008 less so.

Some must haves:

1.2 hack your phone with helloox2
2. install jbak taskman, this is a great freeware task manager that makes you love your 5800. get rc18, hacked phones only
3. google maps
4. Nimbuzz and Fring for IM and VOIP gateway calling
5. Opera Mobile and Opera Mini browsers (get the betas, not the GA versions)
6. gravity- paid twitter client or tweets60 (free)
7. Accuweather
8. Bloomberg Mobile financial news
9. mirggi ICQ client
10. PaderSync ftp, sftp, ssh clients
11. upcode or other 2d and 1d barcode scanners
12. Active File manufacturer version (hacked phones only)
 
I've gone through two 5800s. One had the gap above the volume buttons, and I noticed there was a piece of tape sticking out... looked like black electrical tape. It started to collect dust, I don't know how to get rid of that darned gap.

The other 5800 has no gap.

Both of them get distorted sound when at max volume, especially with the song "Lock Lockdown" by Kanye. It sounds like rattling. Is this what you guys are talking about with distortion? When I play songs with not too much bass at max volume, it sounds fine.
 
2.9 is solid on my E71 and N95-4. Nokia Messaging works well on both of them as well for Gmail, though I do keep the Gmail app installed in case I need to search for a random email to isn't currently synced.
 
Kinetic scrolling would certainly be nice. That being said, it does work pretty well out of the box I think. I just started using it an hour ago and I like it. Just replaced my old treo and an n80 that could not find my router. So far, no gripes
 
I use my 5800 ALL day including music/video on the train in the morning and after work. By the end of the night, it still shows FULL bars :wow:

oh yea, if you're just going to use it just for that, i'd go for it. i just converted some anime episodes to the phone, it looks great on the screen. just beautiful lol
 
You want smart dialing get an: E71, E66, E75 or E55. Done. Toys are for playing. Tools are for when you need to get something done. Remember that.
 
It's not, although you are correct that I got the focal length to image area backwards. A larger sensor would be required to keep the same field of view with a larger focal length.

The old phone, which they label as 2.8/3.7 is listed as being f2.8 with a 3.7mm focal length.
