Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

My GPS connects basically instantly, I start it when I am leaving the house and when I have come down stairs (2nd floor) it's running. I used to have an external blue tooth GPS and although a better chip it took longer to connect, might be due to the the AGPS.

Would definitely help a lot. I don't have a problem with filling the whole screen as it gives you the most space for the keyboard but I don't like the fact that you can't see what you were typing into. It's kinda pointless that the T9 entry takes up the whole screen though.

Not sure which thread to post this one, but I finally caved in and bought the Scalado photorama from the Ovi store.(Five bucks) This is one cool app. I know there are a few HoFoer's out there that think the 5800 camera is garbage, I think the results are awesome (outside pics of course) :2thumbs: . I bet they are even better for the N97. Now I know why panoman was a hit for the N82...FYI..Tom

Quick question and just wondering (coming over from SE) is there such a thing as phone status which will show the actual percentage of battery life instead of the picture of bar strength ? Ive been looking through alot of menus and think there is no such animal. Any one ?? Thanks..Tom

Success! here's what my problem was. I am running Window 7 meaning that NSU is incompatible with my computer which means that I had to use OVI suite to check for updates. I previously had 0581779 (Rogers branded) firmware installed but change it to generic 0577454 not too long ago. After I did that, I checked for firmware updates and OVI Suite said that there were no firmware updates available. I did say that I could reinstall v21. When I did that, it did not reinstall v21. It intsalled v31. Ever since then, OVI Suite says no updates and won't even let me reinstall.

So you're thinking, what am I getting at? If I couldn't reinstall the v31 for 0577454, I couldn't resinstall v31 for 0559682 either. I went to another computer in my house that is runing Windows XP and ran NSU. NSU allows reinstallation of v31 with product code 0577454. So there must be some type of big bug in OVI Suite that doesn't allow proper firmware reinstallation. I went ahead and switch to 055962 using NSS and then used NSU to resinstall v31. After doing that, over the OTA worked! Moral of the story, don't use Windows 7 to install firmwares because there are too many problems with OVI Suite.

I'm now running on 0559682's v 40.2.005. This is a RM-428 product code meaning that it doesn't mess with anything that it shouldn't and 3G still works fine with my Rogers 850/1900MHz 3G service (if you have a "NAM" model). Some of the default settings in v31 between 0577454 amd 0559682 are different but that shouldn't really bother anyone. The only thing that 0559682 does appear to do is add Dutch (?) language support.

For the new style homescreen, it's just the "contacts" them that got changed. The "basic" and "shortcut" themes are unchanged for those who like things the way they were before.

My Nokia 5800 HUP from Rogers just arrived today. It's nice phone, very fun to play with especially with the $10 unlimited mobile browsing plan. I notice there's a sticker across the bottom, with a thin strip sticker with tab on top. I peeled off the thin strip sticker with tab already, can I safely remove the other sticker as well? I'm not sure why it's there if there were two protective films on top already.

^^ Thank you Kindly,

Can someone point me to the latest version of Gmail app please?
Something tells me I'm having the same defaulting issue here. I tried to find it on the desktop (in case the phone was succumbing to the same issue with the maps app) but it doesn't even list them the same way for desktop download purposes.

v2.0.6 is the one I'm getting. Is this the latest?

If the pin was bent don't you think it woudlnt charge? I dont know it goes in almost all the way but it wont snap in like its supposed to do. It still charges but this annoys me.

Yup. Thats what I'm doing.
Did some more testing and found that the recordings are being saved in phone memory in the "digital sounds" folder which is in the " sound files" folder on the c drive(phone memory)
Files are " sound clip 1.mp4" etc. I'm using the file manager to search for them.
Was using Y-Browser earlier but found that its buggy as hell and not accurate.

Im having a couple issues I was hoping someone could help me on:

1) This is my biggest issue (and concern).. No matter what I do, I cannot get my 5800 to default to my wireless AP. I've setup the destination (internet) with my AP as priority 1 and carrier as priority 2. It will still always say "Connecting to Rogers Internet" anytime I launch Facebook, Ovi, and Opera. I've tried absolutely everything here!

2) What's with the battery indicator? It will literally go 3/4's of the day at full bars, then drop to 1 bar. Today I had 5 bars all day, 4 bars for about 10 mins, now it's at 1 bar. This is a little scary when you think you have 4 bars of battery left when in reality the phone dies 15 mins later.

3) Very flakey OS. If I change my homescreen theme back to contacts, the contacts won't show up anymore. Just blank boxes (not clickable at all). I haven't found away around this (reboot, pulled battery etc).. Looks like I'm stuck with shortcuts.

4) About 25% of the calls I'm on when I hang up, it freezes the phone. I get a black screen and the lights are on (Green, White and Red).

5) Apps crash like crazy on this phone. Ovi store crashes 50% of the time on launch. Opera Mini crashes continuously, but, I won't blame Nokia for that.

My user experience with this phone has certainly been average up till now. I realize it's a low end device, but, the features that are promoted, should at the very least, work.

me either...going on 3 weeks with v11, and 2 weeks with v20 and ive never had a single random reboot. minus when thepencil crashed (common problem with that app).

well sports tracker is kinda useful, it tracks all your movements. then you can export that file to google maps and it will overlay your route onto the map with your speeds and path laid out on the map. and you can see all the info associated with it.

i also use it to calibrate my speedometer on my car lol.

Hey i'm liking the 5800 camera as well. Anything taken during the daytime looks very very good and perfectly acceptable for permanent pics of whatever event. Its just the nighttime photos that aren't that good.

And when really comparing it to my old n95 that phone took bad pics at night as well. So its really not much of a loss using a 5800 anyway.

It's works for phones that don't even get to the Nokia logo. My phone was only vibrating when pressing the power button and the screen would not even light up.

Sorry, I slightly misread your original post asking for help. Our situations are slightly different. I get those colored lines but the firmware installation never completes. My phone did reboot but the firwmare installation would get stuck with only a few seconds left in the firmware installation status in NSU. For your situation, Nokia Software Updater appears to have completed its work and since your phone does show a Nokia logo when you turn it on, you might just want to try a 3-finger format first (this erases everything on the phone). In theory, re-installing the firmware using JAF should work since my phone was even more dead than yours but I haven't tried these steps on a phone with your exact symptoms.

Thought you guys would like to hear that the NE version of this phone is better built than the XM. I picked up the NE since I couldn't wait for the XM to be repaired due to the scrambled screen so needless to say, the XM is going to be sold when it comes back :)

The body finish is matte and the chrome is black chrome. The other difference is the buttons have more tactical feel, which was something that lacked on my phone. Overall, the NE was worth the $200 on Black Friday due to the build quality and lifetime nav :D
