Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

I can type faster with the iPhone's keyboard and have a level of accuracy equal to normal thumbboards. Prediction is just icing on the cake. It's not the end be all; I can think of plenty of ways it can be improved too.

Don't knock it unless you've used it for a few weeks to a month repeatedly. Once your muscles are trained to the positions, you can stop touch typing. I'm pretty sure people find the 5800 easier at first because you have to type in landscape and the entire screen is taken up by the keyboard, but even as you get better you will always be limited with the word speed you can put on it and the fact that you will have to switch to T9 if you don't want to use 2 hands. I don't consider T9 a bad thing as I can type at a ridiculous rate with that but qwerty will always be better for entering web addresses and using the gps.

However, I wouldn't use the iphone or current touch keyboards for doing anything more than emails, texting or browsing. Though honestly I don't think I could type anything long on anything other than a real keyboard either..

Yup i'm now using my e71 and in the exact same spot the phone is reading 102dbm. Note my 5800 has been reading around 55dbm all morning today for the last 4 hours. Very weird, but i'm happy with it.

anyone know how the location rules work? I would think calendar entries or gps, but it says "allows switching profile automatically if GSM cell serving your phone changes"

Yes, happened to me twice. Hit the end call button and everything locked up hard. Pulled the battery, re-booted and locks up at the boot screen. Pulling the memory card and re-booting fixed the problem both times. I have a suspicion that it may have been a theme that was installed to memory card.
Bunch of posts on the Nokia forums talking about the exact same problem.

The NAM versions will say "FCC Equipment Authorization: LJPRM-428" and "GSM850/900/1800/1900 UMTS850/1900" on the tag on the end of the box.

Thanks for the responses.
I go to settings>personal>homescreen. Then I only have two options: shortcuts and homescreen theme... Neither give me any checkboxes for music player... where did I go wrong?

@eliu01, also check the Video Sharing setting under Connectivity.

If you don't use packet data you could delete the "AT&T Internet" access point.

It scansbll nearby cell sites for that exact location and memorizes them. So anytime your phone connects to those cell sites it changes profile according to your rule.

There are alot of cool things you can do with this. I remember reading that someone used it to set an alarm on a train for your exact stop. Say you wanted to take a nap on your commute home, but its possible the train could be delayed so that a timed alarm might not make sense. A location alarm could wake you up when the phone physically gets within that vicinity.

I dunno how practical that really is. But the profile location thing definitely works when i've used it.

You can set one profile for work and another for home. I had it where when i arrived at work it would change profile and turn on bluetooth. Then when i get home it would change another profile, turn off bluetooth, and run a certain app. All done automatically by best profiler app.

has anyone tried one of those extended capacity batteries. I know they make the phone super fat and all, but I was just wondering if it was worth it. I use my phone heavily so I take it off the charger at 6:30 am when I leave out and it's beeping at around 5:30 pm

Hey guyz I need some help for a firmware update for my 5800
I have it from rogers and it has v21 right now
Obviously the updater from ovi is not finding any updates although the v40 is out
I've installed the NSS tool but I don't know what to put in the product code a/p in the list Canada is not there
Can I enter anycode from UK per example?
Thanks

There have been 3 updates. But the 2 previous updates didn't add anything, they just fixed bugs and improved touchscreen etc. Those aren't really updates, those are fixes, and if you are happy to count bug fixes then I'd say you have low expectations.

It is just ridiculous at how slow Nokia is. The firmware is ready, ported to NAM and good to go. There are no physical differences betwewen Navi and Xpressmusic phones. That is why I find it inexcusable that Nokia is taking so long.

Fast q to the group...if you are using the Nokia su-8w BT keyboard w/your 5800....I thought I read somewhere that there was also volume control as a keystroke on the keyboard. I knw that the phone is right there, but I thought I read (Symb guru, AAS) that there were extra features beyond the instr. manual...Anyone know ? Many days I break out the stand and keyboard and go laptop mode and play some tunes in the background..Just would like to turn them up or down..Thanks ...Tom

My sister asked me why she couldn't connect her 5800 to her university wifi which is offered to all the students. The students are all given user names and passwords to connect to the wifi all around her campus.

I took her phone there, it shows the name and signal when you search for wlan, but when trying to connect it asked for a wep key, is there another setting that I'm missing?

I made a visit to the tech service they had on campus and they said that the phone did not have the correct security setting, but he also has never seen or used a 5800 before by the way he was trying to use it.
