Nokia 5800 XM NAM(850/1900): Reviews, Issues, Tips, Tricks & Support Thread!!

nice man, i totally agree. i'm just loving my 5800 too, and the screen resolution is the best part. i find web browsing pretty smooth to be hoenst, especially browsing over wifi. once you learn to use finger tip of nail, it gets really easy. and i find that i can fly thru the menu OS really quickly now. i'm just digging everything.

only thing that sucks is the camera.

It's not very good in sunlight but I doubt any screen is. If I take of my sunglasses I can see enough to use it in sunlight. I heard that the 85 screen due to it's amoled screen is very hard to read in sunlight.

Sorry for my fanatical fanboy approach.

Doesn't Nokia also make other products too, like Apple?

My post wasn't meant to be fanboyish. I was just using an apparent nonsensical formula to make a point that simply by models supported it is easy to throw out the idea that Apple is apparently more on top of updates and support than Nokia. I don't disagree with this. They are. And of course Nokia should have more people and resources at its disposal than Apple so they should be able to be on par with Apples timeframe of releases.

I've spent weeks and weeks waiting for firmware releases on various Nokia models. Frustrated weeks. I am not a fanboy of Nokia when it comes to their support. However, there has got to be some sort of exponential affect on release dates for 100+ models vs. 3. I don't know that formula, nor do I care to calculate it. I'll leave that to someone who really cares. But, I can throw out the idea that doing something for 100+ items is probably more complex than for 3.

No such problems on my phone. Not a single freeze or reboot since updating. However, I did hard reset and re-load after the update, so that may have helped. As others have suggested, it's probably something you have installed that's messed up.

I didn't really hard reset for any particular reason, just decided to "clean house" and thought the new update would be a good time/excuse to do it.

Oh, and Opera Mini 5 beta seems to support Kinetic, although I don't know it it's using the native OS or its own (like Skyfire).

The native browser sorta has it. If you do a quick swipe it will scroll very slightly past where you release. I suppose that could be what the post was referring to. But it's not full kinetic which should scroll much farther and faster. And nothing has changed since v40, it behaves the same as it did in v31/v21.

Well i do find it useful. It shows a history of calls and texts and even has a web feed for each contact. I just don't like how we can only use contacts or shortcuts. For me shortcuts is slightly more useful so i use that. I wish we could set both to the homescreen like the n97.

lol well this time i'm definitely just gonna hook it to the back of my pc and leave it there. i used to transfer the cable between pc and netbook and i guess i lost it somehow that way

Testing some calls today while stationary, not on the freeway, and the call quality was perfect. So for now it seems it was maybe due to bad cell signal.

The only reason I am considering going back to S60 (especially after the platform is dead) is 5th Edition and being able to use my finger for everything. If ProfiMail forces me to pull out the stylus for even the simplest task, it's not the client for me.

S60 has indeed historically supported IMAP IDLE (it does on my E61 and E61i, for example), but I read somewhere that it doesn't work on the 5800 XpressMusic. I wanted confirmation from actual owners. I just can't believe nobody here has an IMAP account configured. Gmail anyone?

so, nokia only supports their high end phone! that's a really worst way to treat a customer. yes 5800 is primarily a music phone but i bought it after seeing the overall package. atleast nokia should fix what's default on the phone meaning games, browser etc. From what little videos of n97 i have seen, it looks like they both have same basic sf, with n97 getting all the tweaks and enhancements but nothing for 5800!
may be if nokia provides all that sf tweaks on 5800 than no body will spend on n97. I can't think of any other for them not to support 5800!

i forgot to mention the horrible camera! as i read somewhere else nokia should be sued for this. if not, carl zeiss should sue nokia. i m sorry but this camera is a joke. infact my basic camera phone (2 MP w/o AF) takes better pics than this.

anyways i was happy seeing the specs for 5800 but usability wise, it don't even come close to it's specs.

To say it briefly battery is very good.Nokia is still the best at power management, last but not least the battery is of decent capacity,1320,and screen is not that big.Compare with upcoming HD2.4.2 screen and 1100 battery.LOL.5800 battery lasts me two days of moderate use.

my battery is not that great but that is comparing it to the n85 which has great battery. Maybe its the bigger screen but it wont last of a full day at all.

Ok I am trying out NM email and I have a few questions. Can you really only sync email back 3 days? Really? How do I get notified when I get a new email? I tested it and all I got was a tone. No icon and no blinking light

It is possible provided you are willing to spend $12 like I did. It's a program called Remind Me and it lets you assign different sounds for different events and adjust volume independently.

sorry, that was my point to the image I posted. i realize thats the T9 keypad for messaging but WHY wasn't it just used as the dialer keypad

i really don't get nokia sometimes. i think they smoke too much grass
