No spark! New Build

Harry, great minds think alike. If I were you I'd be glad to know tht the electrical aspect may be getting eliminated. Being able to spin the pushrods after the lifter have bled down is normal I think. I wonder if you can remove your pushrods and check your compression with them out to avoid getting into the rocker boxes if you wanted?

You MUST be able to spin the push rods, after the lifters bleed down, it not you run the risk of the valve being open and bending the exhaust valve. Seen it done before.

Sounds to me like you need to clearance covers...loosen pushrods...wait...let lifters pump back up...start pushrod adjustment over.
Your pushrods are tight because the valves are sticking because of clearance issues.
If the boxes are clearanced and you adjust the pushrods correctly, after about 5 minutes of letting the lifter bleed down, the pushrod should turn no matter what brand they are.
Be certain you're adjusting 1 pushrod at a time, waiting 5-10 minutes before going to next one.
Also, that your cam is in the correct "spot" when adjusting.
You can roll the cams fairly easy with spark plugs out, in the final trans gear...by rotating back tire.

I feel confident these are the areas you need to focus on.
I'm going out riding...you're on your own from here.
Slow it down, have patience.
Don't beat the gas tank with a wrench.
You'll get it right.

Report back to us what you found.

Looks like your on the right track. After clearancing the covers make sure you let the pushrods bleed down after adjustment. If they are holding your valve open there's no compression. You'll get it, no worries. Stay thirsty my friends.

Got the rear adjusted correctly and now have some compression to the rear cylinder. I don't know how much really, but it is a real B to turn the engine with the spark plug in place. Had the guage on and it read 30 lbs after one stroke, so should be good to go. Haven't gotten the cover back on yet. I really need to chase the threads on the left side but can't get to them. I guess it's time to drop the engine a tad.

Got 30 lbs compression in front and rear now after turning over back wheel one revolution. Couldn't make it two. Guess I didn't eat my wheaties today. Hope to have fire in the hole tomorrow after work. Should have checked compression from the get go but this is the first time I have ever done a project like this. Went all out first time! I'll let you all know if I get fire tomorrow. I hope that my battery and starter recovers from yesterday. Still red on the trickle charger. haha

Did some compression checks with the starter and it's 185 rear and 205 front. Phil said that it should even out after the rings seat. Gas tanks going on after work today (for the third time this build). pushrods were still straight and there was no unusual top end sound when turning the motor over without compression, so no damage thank god. So if it does start, I take it 30 second heat cycles for a total of 4 minutes is the flavor of the day for initial start up?

The only thing that I couldn't do was replace the chrome bolts on the left rear rocker box. no room and no special tool and didn't feel like dropping the engine. I used the stockers. You guys won't tell anyone. Will ya?
