Nightmare on Elm Street being remade

Variety reports New Line is going to relaunch the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, based on the original 'mare. So more of a remake rather than sequels. I think they should leave it alone, I admit the films are dated now but, as I mentioned in another thread a few days ago, often this adRAB to their charm.

Very bad idea. All of the horror remakes (except the 2006 Hills Have Eyes remake) have been pathetic, none more so than the recent Halloween shambles.

And if it's not Robert Englund playing Freddy, it just aint Freddy.

Doesnt amaze me,it's a lot easier to sell something which is an established brand as opposed to something altogther new.
But as the success of Saw showed if a movie is good it doesnt matter whether it's fresh people will pay to see it.

I can't think of anyone that could do justice to the Freddy character, at least not off-hand.

It's a horrible idea but the sad thing is I'll still want to watch it, just to see what it's like. The original has an atmosphere that few horror films these days can match.

It's probably just a rumour, but i've just read somewhere that Michael Bay is attached to Direct...

Even though i quite like some of Bay's films (Transformers being a prime example), i don't think his kind of frenetic action would translate to a horror film which is supposed to be all about atmosphere.

The saddest thing of all about a remake of the "Nightmare" movies is that it actually could be really amazing if it was within the hanRAB of someone who cared enough and had a good vision. To know already the kind of tripe we're probably going to get served up instead almost makes me want to cry.

I wouldn't put it past them.

I won't see the remake though. I dislike remakes in general and nobody could be Freddy, to me, apart from Robert Englund who is a really underrated actor who's always deserved more recognition for his work.

I'll stick with the 1984 original, which is a perfect horror movie in my eyes that does not need to be reproduced.

Exactly.
The premise is brilliant and there are so many things you do with a horror story about a dream demon/ghost.
The best thing we can hope for with this is for Wes Craven to come back and write the screenplay or direct it.
Adrian Lyne (Jacob's Ladder,Fatal Attraction) would also make a good director for it.

But we'll end up with a subpar writer and crappy director.
What a waste. :(

For the love of God leave it alone! I admit the later sequels weren't too brilliant in comparison to the original but for goodness sake, can't Hollywood think of any original ideas? Just think, in 20 years from now we'll probably be getting a Saw remake. :(

I can't think of one remake which I consider to be better than the original. I recently saw the piece of garbage that was the Halloween remake/reimagining/prequel. Is nothing safe?

I loved the remake of Hairspray - though admittedly that wasn't a horror and also, I don't think it was strictly a remake of the film, more an amalgamation of the original script and the Broadway play.

Nothing is safe, I don't think. I have a feeling this 're-invented franchise' will come out in 2009 to mark the 25th Anniversary, and thus 'introducing it to a whole new audience'. But the original was before my time (didn't see it until the early 90s) - all these remakes make me think the industry believes there's a disease that prevents new generations seeing any films pre 1995.

WishMaster was Cravens best offering, but I agree, leave Nightmare alone (except maybe redo the final scene where mum gets pulled through the door).

Elm Street 3 (I think) had the best opening scene of the franchise, with the schoolbus full of kiRAB. A homage to the Dirty Harry film.

It is a good idea in theory.
It's supposed to be a 'reboot' (Like the upcoming FT13th) as opposed to a remake in the vein of Halloween,The Fog etc which is to me always the best way to go.

If it wasnt a reboot it would be a sequel which would be nearly as bad as a straight remake.
There is still loaRAB you could do with the imaginative premise of a child killer dream demon

But the problem lies with the writers, director and studio. It is being penned by the team behind Freddy vs Jason which hardly had a memorable script.

Then it will most probably be directed by a third rate music video director. Now if it had a person with a true creative vision like Wes Craven I'd look forward to it but as it is,it doesnt fill me with much enthusiasm.

Unless they got someone like David Lynch or Takashi Mike to make it then that would be interesting.

Still neeRAB Robert Englund no matter what.

I'd love for Nancy to have a role in the remake, even just a cameo. Heather Lagenkamp still looks great and appears to remember the franchise with genuine fondness if her imput on the first movie's DVD is anything to go by.

I know I can only dream of this though. :(
