New York Event: Evening with S60

You've never seen that large Nokia building while driving on 128?

I would have hitched a ride with you (or tried) if I wasn't getting burned underneath the florida sun.

I've seen it many times, and have actually been inside it a few for work. I didn't know Dan before, though. He asked where I was from, so that's how it came up.

No roadtrip for me. I flew. Welcome back to the snow.

^ pretty sure this beats going to CLASS

I wonder if greenteeth is confirmed...i talked to phil and he said we will have name tags for all of us like those nokia events = nice

ok just got back from the event.... i think i was the first to leave (they had a raffle for a 'secret' prize.... WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A BRAND SPANKING PRODUCTION UNIT.... see below under "Surprise/s"). I fondled and meticulously inspected the E90/E61i/E65/N76/N73/N93i/6290/6110 for the first time, saw the N95/N75 again.

Now, I know some parts of my rant below has probably been discussed in this forum to death but heres my take, on a few select devices I saw (I don't post much anyway so this is good for a few weeks/months ):

E90 - Impressive hardware, superior build construction, the keys are Lenovo-ish high grade plastics, the hinge is rock solid, 3 hard solid clicks on the hinge for each 45 degree angle swing. Camera has Auto Focus! Screen resolution was very sharp and bright. Software felt slow, maybe because its a proto... overall this is light years ahead of its s80 grandparents, the 9300/9500.

E65 - Much thinner than I expected, same as my E50. The slider construction feels a notch higher than the N95 slide, if you close your eyes it feels like the snap you feel from opening/closing an 8800. Not too keen on the faux leather treatment at the back which reminded me of my brown 7370. Definitely designed spot on for the business crowd. Aside from the dedicated buttons its essentially a slider form of the E50 with WIFI and upgraded cam. Good buy!

SLEEPER HIT OF THE NIGHT:::
6110 Navigator - Myself and several other visitors were for some reason drawn to this great handset. It does not look, or feel like a Nokia (may I infer probably a joint manufacturing venture like the 6260/6708?), but in a good way. It looks like a dedicated GPS device for sure, like a Garmin so they accomplished that design intent well, with small cues such as the 'cross' that is on the four corners of the screen and on the navigation keys (other non "Nokia canon" design cues are the sliding camera cover which reminds me of SE cybershot phones and the "GPS" logo on the back which reminds me of uhm, LG/Samsung which had to imprint their phones actual features on every nook and cranny ("HIGH RESOLUTION CAMERA!"/"LOUDSPEAKER!"/"GPS!", etc). Again, these are not negative traits as they imbued the phone with an aura of "high tech electronics". The slider mechanism is same as the E65, very solid with a good satisfying click on each motion. One of the best keys of any Nokia, close 2nd to the venerable N93! This had S60v3 FP1 built in, noticeably much faster than vanilla s60v3 such as my E50/E65. The navigation package is route 66 and not smart2go, GPS did not lock on for some reason but I'm attributing that to the fact that this is a proto. I can't believe i'm saying this, but I MAY be skipping the N95 for THIS. In my estimation, if T-Mobile ever brings this here, this will win them customers and bring many wayward ilk who strayed to the forces of Moto back to the waiting eager arms of Espoo (I own 15 shares of NOK).

SURPRISE/S OF THE NIGHT:

1.) S60v3 Feature Pack 2 demo, on a 6290 which I believe they also did in Barcelona (tried to squeeze some techie journalist questions such as "without disclosing specifics, which device are you rolling this FP out to first, or do you have a date range?" lol which did not elicit a response at all from the Nokia person at hand (Mikko R?ntynen). NDAs. After the crowd dispersed I think he blurted out Q3 on the N.....

2.) When they mentioned the raffle draw, myself and some blokes were guessing "bah, bluetooth headset, maybe BH-800 TOPS." They raffled off a NOKIA N95. Spontaneous applause and sweaty beads of anticipation followed. 'Nuff said.

hors d' ouvres, liquor.. fun and an jaw-dropping show of Nokia's upcoming arsenal... a definitely well deserved night for the bloggers and the faithful, thanks to Phillip Schwarzmann and to the rest of the guys at Nokia for this great event!
