New Style of DVD Case?

Not sure if in the right section but....

I Just got Chronicals of Riddick from my local Asda and on getting it home found the DVD case had a red tab on the side it opens. It was some type of locking/security seal that refused to open no matter what I did (short af TNT). After a while I decided to use a screwdriver to try to pry it open without damaging the case.

Eventually I got the case open to find the tab had a plastic strip that extended under the disc and stopped the removal of it due to the 'push thing' (in the center of the disc) was locked by the strip not letting it press down also there was a metal clip to stop the strip bieng pulled out. The only way to remove it was to break the tab off and push it through into yhe case. Picture

I have never seen one of theses before and I am sure if they are all like this then there will be a few broken discs going back to shops.

Now is it me being a retard :o or are these things a new anti theft device or even one that should never have been put on sale?

Your comments gratefull.

I think they are the security tags used by the shops to prevent shoplifting (similar to the ones attached to expensive jackets in clothes shop)

I'm surprised you didn't set off the shop alarm when you walked out of the shop...

Never seen one like that before. I use shops like HMV, Woolworths and WhSmith for my DVRAB and never come across anything like that. Maybe its a new Asda scheme or there testing them out at Asda stores.

I hate it when you walk out of shop and then the alarm suddenly goes off, and then suddenly everyones staring at you. Most of the time the checkout take the security things off tough.

I bought a game for my Gamecube recently in HMV and they had one of these tags on them, but the lady behind the desk removed it before scanning it into the till. Maybe the assistant just forgot to remove yours. Take it back and complain if the disk is damaged, it's their fault for not removing it in the first place.

Padzter :D

As i work for ASDA i can confirm that the red plastic strip is a security tag and the shop assistant should have removed it when scanning it at the checkout.

Thanks all....... and No xElijahLoverx I didn't nick it  :D I paid for it and the girl on the checkout scanned it on the Barcode reader then passed it accross the security tag de-activator so that it wouldn't set off the allarms at the door.

I managed to get the disc out without damaging it Padzter but it was a bit touch and go for a while.

Simon1984, there was the original wrapper on the DVD when I got home so are these tags made especially for Asda as they would have to take the wrapper off to remove the tag?

I don't know if the tags are exclusive to ASDA as a poster above said HMV had them. Most of the time they are easy to remove but sometimes you have to break the plastic covering to get the tag off, maybe the assistant that served you was too lazy. To remove the tags we use a magnetic appliance and i'm not surprised you had trouble removing it. Presumably you will go back and get a replacement or a refund.

No the only damage was to the tag the box had a slight kink in it wich i managed to get out so I will stick with it. However I will give them a ring in the morning to let them know that they didn't remove the tag and to stop others having the same hassle. ;)

Oh and next time I buy a DVD from anywhere I will check it hasn't got one of those seals before I take it from the shop. :D

I'd take the film back anyway, it's not even the proper version of Riddick, just the Disney one. Get a Director's Cut Version on Import instead, has 20 minutes etc footage and all violence restored in the fight scenes.

They are Amaray Red Tags and are increasingly common in the shops. They are designed to be anti-theft even if successfully stolen, by making forced entry very difficult to do without causing damage to the box and the disc itself (and therefore their sell-on value to thieves). Do not attempt to open it yourself. I learnt this myself the hard way.

I bought a Red Tagged DVD from Virgin a year ago, and not knowing how tough it was, took it on with screwdriver, scissors, craft blade, and pliers. By the end of the battle, the box was in smithereens and the disc suffered two little scratches to it. But liberated.

I must be a budding master criminal (or lucky) as I managed to get the box open and the disc out with no scratches. The only real damage was to the tag *evil laugh* wich deserved it.

Asda said that they will let all their checkout staff know about the tags, and offered to exchange the disc for a new one if I wanted.

As for the D/cut version all my DVD players only play region2 discs. :( I can't be bothered to get them chipped so I will have to wait untill they bring that version to the U.K

No plans to bring a D/Cut of Riddick to the UK nor plans to bring a D/Cut of Aliens vs Predator either. Thank God for CD-Wow. Just placed my order for:
Riddick D/Cut
Resident Evil Apocalypse Special Edition
Bubba Ho-Tep

All Region 1's but thankfully my Philips DVDR70, Goodmans GDVD124, Playstation 2 and PC all play multi-region discs so I have no issues with them.

Good site really doesn't charge Postage and send all items as seperate parcels so they'll fit through a letterbox.

My brother bought Ricky Gervais - Politics from HMV the other day and it had one of these red tags in. However, he ended up breaking the DVD case around the DVD to release it. Surely these devices should set off an alarm or shop assistants should know to take them out.

ALSO! this was under the factory wrapping of the DVD, so surely the shop assistant would have to open your brand-new bought DVD to open it.

Lozzie, it is not under the wrapping, it is pushed through the wrapping when sliding it into place. And the tags SHOULD set the alarm off when you walk out.

Not if they have been de-activated, but not removed. That was what happened with mine.

Finglonga, your technique was obviously better than mine! Did you do it without breaking the box?

Eusebius, I agree. Although why the idiots would deactivate a red-tag then not remove it escapes me.

As for Finglonga's technique, I'm not trying to cast aspersions, but it is possible that the tag was not fitted properly, allowing him to extract it without too much damage?

I am in the process of removing one of these red tags. I cant be arsed to take it back to the shop, I got it from Virgin Megastores and it's too far away for me to take back, plus I'm not going shopping again till the sales are over. I have destroyed the case, but the tag remains.

Wish me luck!

edit:: HA HA HA! In your face you red tag bast*rd!! I didnt do any damage to the disc, and luckily i have plenty of spare cases. What a chore though.
