new notification shows up and then disappears

No, and I believe you are the first to report it here. Do you have any apps installed that alter the notification engine, such as dgAlert, or Locale. Are you getting the audible altert at the same time? What about vibrate? And does it always do that, or just under certain conditions?

I rebooted and it seems to work. But now I'm getting delayed email, too. or no notification. It's been really sporadic

I think it's the same issue all of us are having, If you leave an email open or a text message thread open and just press home it will happen. Try this when it happens again, just check if you have an email in viewing state.

be careful because it will make your alarm be silent too, I was late for work once because of this. I feel it is a very big issue, the alarm part of it at least.

Wow, I hadn't heard of this. So, to recreate it, I should open gmail, open an email, and then press home. Then I should send my phone an email from my desktop and when the phone receives the emal, it won't notifiy properly? And if the alarm clock were to go off during this time, it wouldn't sound either? Did I get that all right? And the way to fix it is to hit the back arrow when viewing an open email? If all of that is correct, that's quite a bug.

I think that is what you need to do, not really 100% positive but this happens to me a lot and I have seen a couple of other users, try it and let me know.

Just tested and the notification worked exactly as it should. Nothing out of the ordinary. It must be some other magic combination.

i just recreated it. Try this:

Send yourself a test email, pull down the notification bar and open the email, now press home. Send yourself a second email, for me it vibrated and showed up for two seconds then disappeared.

Maybe it's only when you leave new emails open and press home.

yeah when I'm texting someone.. and then we stop.. if I don't close the messaging program... the next time they text me I don't get an alert, a vibrate, a notification.. nothing... it assumes I'm in the messaging program so I must be looking at my phone. Which is never the case.

So i make it a point to back out of message threads now.

I haven't received my G1 yet so I can't test it first hand, but from what it sounds like it shouldn't be a difficult fix for google. It seems that android keeps the messaging programs running in the background as if they were in the foreground, when a new message comes in it assumes the messaging window is already displayed and you see it even though the messages program is running in the background. Hopefully they'll fix it soon enough

Hmm.. I tried recreating it like you suggested and it's still working for me. By the way, I have email notifications turned on, and my ringtone is a custom ringtone off the sd card. And I have vibrate turned off. But I haven't been able to reproduce the same symptoms yet. There's got to be a common thread somewhere...

This happens to me a lot. Usually, if I am in any SMS view, I would only receive notifications about other events other than the SMS-received event. The phone will not ring, vibrate, or display an icon. The only way I would know is to exit out of SMS completely and go back in to see that there is a thread with the green indicator on the left. The same is true for emails. However, this behavior is not very consistent. Sometimes, I would actually get an notification icon. But when I do get the icon for an email received under these circumstances, and I go in and delete that email, my Inbox count would read (-1) as opposed to (0).
