New Macross (Macross Frontier) - Talkback

Eh, and others love macross for the music as well as the characters. Really, theres no way in the defending it. You either like or you don't. *shrug*

Well, thats not different then "gaint robots pwn all". And all shows are all commericalised. So....

I'm kind of surprised that, after all this time, Japanese animation studios aren't trying to do modern remakes of the original series (ie Gundam, Macross etc), for all those kiddos who didn't grow up in the 70s and 80s and dont know how these franchises started.

Episode 8 was the weakest so far, and not just because of the animation. It was wasted on very weak comedy. Chasing after stolen underwear? My-Hime did a stupid episode all about that too, and it didn't work back in 2004 either. I can get past Sheryl coming to school as long as they mostly keep away from more wacky high school hijinks like what went on in that episode.

Nine was quite good. The ending was never in doubt, we all knew Michael wasn't going to miss his shot the second time. Still, it was a very nice character piece and a refreshing change from the constant focus on Alto and how he relates to Ranka and Sheryl. I thought Michael's compulsion to vindicate his sister through his own abilities was very human and understandable. His vulnerability and sensitivity about that was quite a change from the normally confident, wise-cracking guy we've seen up until now. If we get to see other sides to characters like this more often, the series will be better for it.

One thing I hope this series does is a really cool new macross-class battleship. Battle 7 from Macross 7 was okay but I'd like a transforming super battle ship that wasn't joined to the main colony ship.

What do you guys think the new macross-class ship for this series should be like?

I didn't come in here to bash Macross. It was a genuine question which I was hoping could start a brief side discussion. Alot of close frienRAB really rave about Macross, but I can't really get into it. Since the musical focus is the big hurdle for me, I was hoping to discuss it.

Arguably, they have- that was the point of SEED. Add in alot of kid aimed projects that somehow expect young fans to know their Ryu from their Domon.

You know, I didn't think much of this show when I first saw it but it real has turn out to be quite the little jem. Its provide some great looking battles and the ever fun love triangle plus a little dose of tragedy. One episode to go and they seem to know how to do a good ending as well.

Probably because the same scriptwriter from My-Hime for almost all of it's episodes (Hiroyuki Yoshino) is also involved with Macross Frontier and has written the scripts for several of the episodes and I believe I saw it on another forum that this was also one of his.

Now if this leaRAB to Sheryl in a bikini thurabing down a passing vehicle I won't complain too much though.

I'd definitely prefer any Macross 7 connection to be referential, if only because I don't really know anything about it and I'd hope they'd write the show so that anybody can "get" Macross Frontier without having to be really familiar with the rest of the franchise. If they end up throwing in cameos in a passing nod to fans or what have you though, more power to them.

I wish I had an answer for why it exists...that one song seems to have an impact on the Vajra for some reason, so maybe there's some actual importance to music here like in the first series after all.

HC, I'd recommend the Macross II movie if you haven't looked. Its a great self-contained movie that doesn't rely on music by any means.

One of the things I liked about ep. 9 is that the Guy in the Red Veritech (I think they called him Purple 1 so lets go with that for now) is not the uber-elite unstoppable pilot: he's very skilled but he still got a leg and a head blown off even with the superior machine.

Music not play a roll in Macross II? I think you should rewatch it GW, not that isn't a great movie but music is a fairly strong part of the plot.

Oh and Hellcat about Macross's focus on music. Think of it this way; it's what makes Macross Macross... When I think of it 3 things come to mind: transforming fighterjet mecha, love triangles and music. It's like final fantasy with airships and a guy named Cid. It what makes macross different from Gundam or Code geass. I can see if you're trying to get into macross using frontier as a starting point can be hard (it sort of does require a little background knowledge on the macross universe to really feel the story)

Hellcat if you haven't seen it already watch the Macross plus OVA it really doesn't put as much focus on music (it's still there) and the animation is wonderful.

He probably means all the nonsensical references to protoculture. Not to mention how they constantly refer to a pile of dirt as the SDF-1.

Heres a better image of the shows mecha. I think the CGI looks good. Most likely it's based on the VF-19. For more information (it's not much) go here http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5415

I personally liked the giant panties scene. I mean... come on. What's better than your date on all fours signing a giant's panties?

Either way, I personally enjoyed the episode. As far as "Date episodes" go, this one was handled pretty nicely. SherylxAlto ftw.
