New Macross (Macross Frontier) - Talkback

I haven't seen Macross 7 and I watched both versions of episode 1 with no problem.

As to the two versions, the "Deculture" version emphasizes the alien threat more and has more Alto angst while the regular version makes the concert work better (IMO).

I'll be blogging the series.

It's just the sheer focus on the importance of music that bugs me. Like anyone, I enjoy music. I'll admit that somewhat my interest is quite tame, but I love a good song and such. I also see that originally Macross used music as being effective as culture shock, which sits fine with me. However, since then it seems the shows have made music this ridiculously powerful force and Frontier especially looks to want to push that for commercial reasons. I'm sure Japan loves such an angle, given how much they love their pop idols. But for me, it seems kind of obnoxious and silly that in this world of giant aliens (another concept I'm slightly iffy on), mecha and enormous battleships that it all comes down to idol girls. Just seems to be another good idea that got twisted to make money.

I'll try and watch the examples people have suggested, because I really would like to get into it if I can. Alot of people who I have a high opinion of keep telling me how great they find Macross, so there has to be something there that I haven't quite found yet.

I saw 24. Great episode. I'll post some comments in spoiler tags about a few things I noticed just in case people want to watch this series and don't want to be spoilered.

Alto isn't dead. In my opinion, I don't think he's near his mech/plane when it flies towarRAB Brera. I think after he gets shot in the wing, and flies behind the wreckage, he ejects. Then it auto-pilots itself to Brera (notice how it didn't seem to try and avoid the shots) and gets destroyed as a distraction. We'll probably see how he got out in a flasrabroadack sequence of some sort.

Also, how is Ozma NOT dead? He's had so many deathflags thrown on him, it's not even funny. Now if he DOES die in 25, I'll actually be pissed. I mean... to come this long with so many deathflags, it'd just be horrible to kill him off. D: I think he will die though while trying to protect Ranka or something.

Overall, the scenes with Alto/Sheryl were great.

Agreed on the Grace in skintight outfit while fondling herself. That was... awesome.

"Ranka Lee First Live!! Revenge"

Is is just me or do alot of character designers rely on someone not shaving as often to show aging?

I really hope the new opening is a one time thing.

Ozuma almost completely Focker'd up.

Fire Boraber heavy episode.

OMG. BOrabER!!!!!!!!

MARKED OUT

Ozama just displaying bad ***ness in spades in the space battle. For a second I thought he was going out "I made the impossible, possible" Mu La Fraga style from Seed when he took that shot aimed for the bridge.

Then they went with the almost complete Roy Focker duplication hah

Maintenance checks cockpit and finRAB blood? Check
Pilot doesn't tell anyone he was wounded and leaves? Check
His girl telling pilot she'll cook his favorite thing and wanting him to come over? Check
Pilot bleeding out and his girl freaks out? Check

But he lives! hah. Nice

I'm thinking the OP is just a one-time thing for laughs.

So watching ep 5 I'm wondering why Klan Klan was even micronized in the previous episode if they have facilities for full-size Zentraedi's...

Which brings up another question, you talk about giant cows as being good for providing more meat/milk, but then you also need more resources to feed them so it's probably a wash. I wonder how exactly is it resource-viable to allow Zentraedi's to stay in their giant form? You need a lot more food to feed a full-size Zentraedi, you need a lot more space to house them, and look at those panties.

How many regular human-size panties could you get out of that pair? 50? 100? c'mon.

That all being said I loved the look of the mall, I wonder if they have specifically designated walkways for humans so the Zentraedi don't accidentily step on them? I was trying to tell. Obviously a full-size Zentraedi couldn't get on that regular size escalator, but I was wondering about stores. It looked like the store that Alto & Sheryl found the panties in was human size, but had giant size Zentraedi items in it for some reason. Maybe a micronized Zentraedi would come in and order stuff to then be delivered?

I think the series will have more of these non-space battle type episodes in order to allow the animators working on the space battles to have time to actually get that stuff done.

I thought the way the whole band came together for Ranka was pretty funny, I could have understood the guitar guy, but all of a sudden you had a Boraber-esque backup group complete with drummer and keyboardist

Megumi Nakajima's engrish in the song wasn't all that bad, I've definitely heard much worse and it's somewhat surprising to hear a very young VA in her first roll carrying that off as well as she did. I'm going to chalk it up to Yoko Kanno because I think if you look at all the past projects she's involved in with various singers or VA's performing a song with english lyrics I think she must work with them a lot to try and get it as good as possible for each singer.

It's interesting that Megumi is in a very similar situation to Maaya Sakamoto in that when Maaya debuted in Escaflowne she worked with Yoko Kanno very closely and have collaborated off and on ever since (probably why Maaya is singing the ending theme).

Beat, never jugde a book by its cover, or in this case a anime by the first Ep. I mean we don't even no how the main plot will progress, or what kind of sub-plots will pop out. I say watch it to at least Ep 6 before making a opinion.

I've been behind on Frontier, but I'm catching up. After 21, I wanted to slam my head on my desk. Yes Ranka, you're not loved best, so run off with freaky aliens--you know, the same ones that you're afraid that your singing helps to destroy that which you hold dear.

Spectacular idea.

That's it, Alto/Sheryl supporter over here.

I dunno, I think his red veritech is more a nod to Milia. One of the few anime models I have is her red veritech near one of my computers... lol

I think he comes off kinda like a protodevlin from M7. There was 1 or 2 who were semi-recurring where they'd come in and fight and usually get driven off. Although they seem to be fleshing out this guy more then any of those characters were.

I think we see Alto and him can fight each other so it's a pretty good/solid rivalry there. I still hold out my crazy hope that he's the descendant of Hikaru from Macross somehow... It would fit in with the getting your veritech damaged thing

Definitely for me as well and I think the majority of fans feel that way from looking at other forums. Although I've been against Alto/Ranka from the start just because she looks too much like a little kid. I see her as a surrogate kid sister for Alto tbh.

BTW the first soundtrack is out for the show.

Full version of Triangular(Opening Theme)
Full version of Diamond Crevasse(Ending Theme)
Full version of some of Sheryl's songs (Don't be late, What bout my star?, and Infinity)
Ranka full version of What bout my star? and Aimo, Aimo.

Episode versions of Ranka singing the carrot song, aimo, aimo , and a few second long version of her singing the nyan-nyan commercial song.

Basically it is just full of win

The whole giants thing was one reason I could never really get into Macross. Especially not like this, since now they seem to be turning into some weird fanservice thing. A corabined shopping mall? Corabined death trap more like.

Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to imply I thought you were bashing the show.

And gundam has made giant robots named gundam into an all powerful force for commercial reasons. No difference.

Like I said, the singing is just like the mecha. Theres nothing the show can do if you don't like that element of it. I don't know what else to say. There isn't some hidden element that you are missing thats stopping you from enjoying the show. People watch Marcoss for the drama and the music. If you don't like the music and drama then your not going to like the show. Its that simple.

And theres nothing wrong with that. Not everyone is going to like every anime.

And people say anime is childish.

Really, when did music become to childish to be the focus of a story or anime?

How exactly is it different from gaint robot gundams coming to save the day?

Anime has all kinRAB of style, there is no set of rules it has to follow if it doesn't want to.

Besides, in the original the music just gave the humans an edge in battle. There was still a massive apocalyptic battle that had to be fought.

Of course, Macross Frontier is using the music as fanservice a lot but its better than most fanservice and no different then having episodes devoted to how invincible a giant robot is.
