Needing to feel some "love"

Look at the mission. You're planning on commuting with it and doing a track day or two each year. I do 90%/10% commuting/canyon rides and the base is all I need. (Granted, I'm just a poser and can't ride anywhere near this thing's limits, but me buying the S is like the guy who buys the giant SUV with the full off-road package and uses it to take his 40 lb kid to soccer practice and to drive to the country club.) Will you notice the difference, or get to utilize the Ohlins shocks, forged wheels, and adjustable damper on your way to and from work? Can and will you ride the thing that close to the limit--on the streets--that the S is worth another $4k?

Anyway, get the red base and use some of the money you save to buy the CF Termi slip-ons; they sound great, look tits, and without the cats and steel shell, they're not nearly as hot under your cajones.

That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

lol...yeah, i am a 'poser' too...great advice and that is exactly what i wanted to hear...

so..here is where i am at thus far:
1098 (red) with cf termi slips
mirror extenders
frame sliders (any advice here?)
and (Zman need some input on this one) slipper clutch (?)

Using that logic as being a poser and not being able to ride it near it's limit, why spend the extra $2500 or so on the full Termi's? You're not going to be able to use the power that it has since you're on the street and you're not that type of rider anyway (no offense intended). What's wrong a simple slip on if you're just looking for sound? That exhaust will eat up more than half of your "savings" from getting a base model over an "S" (which had more performance parts than you needed). You could get the better suspension, the "bling factor" of the S and add a set of slip ons and achieve the same thing.
I really don't understand how people talk about not being able to use the goods the "S" model comes with, but then talk about changing things out on the base model. Any suspension is going to need to be set up. That's true of base, ohlins or if you went out and bought a set of ohlins alone. You're going to have to tweak it to your liking. The few pounds of unsprung weight saved with the wheels is a big deal in terms of throttle response and acceleration. If you're going to save weight looking for performance...the place to do it is on a rotating part powered by the drivetrain.
Really, it comes down to what you want to do with the motorcycle and what you're willing to spend. If you'll have any doubt after buying a base model if you should have bought an "S," then it might be worth it alone so you don't second guess yourself. On the other hand, if you think you might get the "S" and find yourself wishing you hadn't sprung for the extra cash, that's another issue.
Either way, both bikes are more than any of us need for the street. Really, if we're just going to be cruising the streets and "posing," we don't need much more than a single cylinder 250cc street bike with decent looking body work. For most of us, that's not why we've arrived at purchasing a performance motorcycle...and certainly not why we've committed to buying a Ducati (one of the most expensive performance motorcycles).
The decision is yours my friend...both will bring you happiness and both will draw attention. The real deal maker is what attention is in those details.

Shane, i think part of the pose thing is that you've buy the stuff you don't need just so ou can say that you paid a lot for the unused parts. I think I can understand the breakdown between wanting to save money by upgrading the base model and then buying full Termi pipes that won't be fully squeezed for every little horsepower.

Doc, I've got Speedymoto under body frame sliders.

thanks armoresquid - will do research on this brand

as far as the "poser" goes (my opinion)...i don't fully understand the insane power and amazing handling that the 1098 has wrapped up in potential...as of now i would like to go to the track maybe 1-2 times this year...but hey...maybe this whole experience will totally infect me and i may become a track-guy...if this happens then i may want to do some upgrading if i purchase the 1098...but maybe i would not have to so much if i paid the extra for the "s"...

i call myself a poser b/c i do not have the experience that many of you "track-guys" have...i am just asking for opinions...but i know that i am going to choose whatever bike i want b/c i have decided that THAT is the bike that i want....

...thats all...just wanted to clarify my "poser-ness"

ciao

Zman (or anyone else who wants to chime in) - any thoughts on getting the slipper clutch put on or is that something that should be on my "list of things to never get"? (i read thru the debate but it still seems like there is no real consensus)

went to the ducati dealership in raleigh to check out the 1098 (red)...holy crap!! i can't believe how amazingly beautiful that machine is in person (it has been about 3 months since i last saw/rode it)...but this time my wife was with me and to see the bike and my wife's eyes saying "YES!" at the same time made me feel like a little kid!! HELLS YEAH!!! I'm getting a bike BOYS!!!!
