Look at the mission. You're planning on commuting with it and doing a track day or two each year. I do 90%/10% commuting/canyon rides and the base is all I need. (Granted, I'm just a poser and can't ride anywhere near this thing's limits, but me buying the S is like the guy who buys the giant SUV with the full off-road package and uses it to take his 40 lb kid to soccer practice and to drive to the country club.) Will you notice the difference, or get to utilize the Ohlins shocks, forged wheels, and adjustable damper on your way to and from work? Can and will you ride the thing that close to the limit--on the streets--that the S is worth another $4k?
Anyway, get the red base and use some of the money you save to buy the CF Termi slip-ons; they sound great, look tits, and without the cats and steel shell, they're not nearly as hot under your cajones.
That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
