We're at the stage of life where we go out to dinner with friends

home cooking or not. We just want to enjoy each other's company over
a nice meal.

Big emphasis on "*if* they appreciate". Most people can't tell a $6
bottle from a $60 bottle.

For us, the compelling blend from Penzey's is Fox Point seasoning. We
used to mix spices ourselves for vinaigrette; now we just use Fox
Point.

Stick to the basics from American Spoon Foods. We have jars of fruit
salsa that I don't know what the heck to do with -- they are too sweet
to cook with and too weird to use as jam.

Chop and add to chopped par-cooked potatoes. Even frozen O'Briens
will do. Throw all in skillet and pan fry like hashbrowns. Voil?!

Yes, onions too. Plus I make it *pulled* and chopped corned beef when
I'm feeling fancy and I'll probably do that because it'll be dinner,
not breakfast on Friday. I also like to put an egg (runny yolk) on
top of the hash... I'm the only one who prefers this - cover the egg
with a generous amount of hollandaise sauce. Oh, yum! It's icing on
the cake for me

I always have lots of left over spuds I boiled with the cabbage,
carrots, and corned beef. I also fry an onion or two that goes into
the hash... saute and place into a roasting pan and bake until heated
through and nicely browned... I always pull it from the oven before
it's done baking and make a bunch of depressions with the back of a
spoon that I crack eggs into... finish baking until eggs are done to
your liking. Sometimes I add diced red and green pepper; corned beef
hash o'brien.

There's a Penzy's half an hour or so away from me, that might be a
good excuse to go.

Have you thought about adding some lemon juice to cut the sweetness?
Maybe you'd have to heat them to do it.

I like using real corned beef better than canned corned beef but the
cans are available any time I like. Open a can, finely dice the
contents, ready to start. Not as good as with a leftover corned brisket
but better than most restaurant corned beef.

But leftover when available, absolutely.

I like to mix 4 parts finely diced potatoes to 1 part finely diced
turnip and 1 part finely diced carrot.

Topped with an egg and hollandaise. That's the best.

Sunny Paris is quite similar--chives, garlic, green peppercorns, etc--but
doesn't have salt and includes a few other herbs. It's great stuff, albeit
expensive. If you haven't tried Mural of Flavor, you might give it a whirl.

It's a redo, not a first marriage. They aren't my friends, so I
didn't want to design an design an entire gift package for her - but
super nice kitchen towels could be included with good quality Egyptian
cotton bath and hand towels... plus she could throw some disposable
shop towels into the package and if she wants to go over the top, she
can include beach towels, which would be completely appropriate if
they're planning a honeymoon anywhere near a beach.

I mostly drink soft drinks from the bottle and refill the capped

They do make an ice cube tray that makes bottle shaped ice. I've seen it in
catalogs.

We never have ice in this house. When I first got this fridge/freezer we
had a horrible heat wave. I was buying bags of ice and making cubes. I
seemed to have enough room for it then. No room for it now.

Same here. I do use some paper towels, and yes they are useful for certain
