Long story short, but dented rear fender on 08 RKC and need to replace. What prior rears are direct fit? Or are there after-market options or even some custom work to make 09-later fender fit to allow slightly wider wheel / more tire options?

To get the '09 fender to fit you will need alot of work. To increase the tire size and stuff, you will need a new swingarm and such also. Any touring rear fender from '99 to '08 will fit your bike. The only thing you need to watch out for is that some fenders (Road King Custom, for example) don't have the hole for the bumper light on the bottom. However, the fenders without the whole are not very common at all, I tried to find one after getting hit in the rear and most of the fenders I could find had the hole. I ended up contacting a local custom painter and he took a take off Road King Classic fedner, welded the hole, and painted it for much less than a brand new one!

for OEM, all rear fender except road glide, street glide, CVO and roadking custom wich have no bottom holes.
for aftermarket, you have the choice!! for me a chuppa from Yaffe but that's the one i dream of

Unless you have an in with a good painter, go with OEM parts.
I just ordered a front fender from my dealer, not the parts dept guys.
In vivid black it was priced at around $650.....he sold me one for $375.
An aftermarket one professionally painted would of cost me that.

How much do you think to get a professional paint job (vivid black) on a rear fender? It looks like around $415 for pre-painted new oem. I've seen ebay fenders (wrong color so far) for under $200......but how much more for pro painting???

Cheapest option would probably be to luck into a take-off rear fender that was the correct color. Next would probably be to take your existing fender in to a paint shop and have it repaired and painted. If it's just a simple dent, and not all crumpled up, it should be an inexpensive fix.

Save some money and remove it yourself and take it into the paint shop. It's not a difficult job. One bit of advice I will give you is this: get it all stripped down and up on a lift, then unbolt your shocks. The rear wheel will drop down enough to allow you to reach the bolt that's up under the seat. Save you some headache that way.
