N95-4 Constantly rebooting

My N95-4 is on a permanent reboot. It literally just finishes the boot sequence and my home screen comes up and then it immediately starts rebooting again. Is there anything I can do here or is it time to get rid of my old fav? The keyboard is not responding to anything during the boot. I really dont want to have to give up this phone if I dont have to.

My N95-3 used to reboot constantly at certain locations (the same place -ie tower- on the freeway or the Santa Monica farmers market, an iPhone concentration) but it stopped 3 months ago. I am pretty sure it is 3g/network related. It has been discussed in other threads.

Remove your SIM and see if it still reboots. This would eliminate the network as an problem. If it still reboots then we can look at other areas.

If it doesn't reboot without the SIM then it's likely a network issue. Boot without the SIM and lock it into GSM mode, see if it reboots with your SIM. If not, then it's likely an issue with the updated AT&T 3G overlay which has plagued many older Nokia devices on AT&T. If it appears to be this then we need to look at updating your firmware to v3x to help with this issue. It may require a product code change in order to perform the update though.

Great tip, Gorgonesh.

Also, if find your reboot connected to the rpesence of the AT&T SIM, thrown in a TMobile SIM (borrowed or purchased, prepaid) for the update.

My 6650 was subject to reboots in some areas of DC and in NYC - fixed (apparently) after a firmware update! Hopefully this is the same issue!

OK... The tips/fixs are much appreciated and well thought out, however, it does not appear to be the at&t 3G reboot dilemna. I was actually in rural WI when the issues began and was in 2G coverage or using my Microcell at the house. The reboots started after I used the phone while connected to the Microcell. It will not hold stable enough to do a 3 key format. I try to reboot w/o SIM and it boots offline then reboots. How can I do a dead usb flash?

I recently (end of June) updated my firmware but I am not sure which version.

Thanks.

Sorry this isn't working out for you. So it doesn't boot fully into the OS and reboots before it even finishes loading? If it does that it should be enough to try the 3-finger salute since it's a deep level format during the boot process. Hold the '3', '*' and green call key and then power up holding all four keys until the unit is fully rebooted and reformated. You will loose all your phone data but nothing on the 8GB internal memory. Wish there was a safe mode to work with here.

The 3 fingered reset worked! I had my phone backed up when I upgraded firmware so I didnt lose much at all. Thank you guys so much for your help. Unfortunately, I ordered the 6700 slide in the meantime and it has already shipped! Oh well... I can give that phone to someone else.

What is the message center #? I know its like 312 area code but dont have it on my phone and when I try to send a text now it asks for it.

Thanks.

Great :)

Our Nokias are incredibly robust. Now if only they'd be as glitzy as some other phones ...

I can message you my address if you can't 'find' anyone to 'give' your 6700 to :) It runs S60v3, FP2, right? It'll be a great string of upgrades for me ... 6620->N75->6650->6700 ;)

ashut,

I appreciate the offer to take the 6700 off my hands but I already promised it to my dad who lives in an area with no cell service but has a microcell w/o a 3G phone.

So my string of upgrades goes all the way back to the 3650>3600>6620>6682>N75>N73>N95>N95-4>E71>N97

I did not use my N75, N95, or N97 for long... I still occassionally use my E71 but the 95-4 is so hard to beat.

I've been having reboot problems on AT&T with my N95-4. Actually, my problem phone shuts off, and I don't realize it until I take the phone out--very frustrating.

I will search for instructions on how to upgrade to the later v3x via a product code change. Is there a specific fix in the v3x changelog for this problem? Also, can anyone explain to me how an AT&T network problem can cause my phone to shut off by itself? Is there a "shut down" command that is part of the communication standards between the network and the phone? I'm just curious about this.

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I will try downgrading to a forced 2G connection and using a t-mobile sim card before I do anything else. Maybe I'll ask AT&T for a new SIM card, first? (However, I haven't found anyone posting that they've fixed a phone reboot/shutdown problem on AT&T via sim card replacement.)

Try an updated SIM from AT&T. It likely won't solve any problems but is always recommended.

The N95-4 on early firmware would shut down when it sat idle for long periods. I don't remember this being an network issue but I saw it shut down a few times. What version of firmware are you on now? Use *#0000# to get the latest version.

Don't worry about a T-Mo SIM at this point, just look to update your AT&T SIM and get back to us with the current firmware version. The shut-down versus reboot are two different issues. Have you had any reboot issues? Or have then just been shut down?

I have both reboot and shutdown. Problem started sometime this year and got worse. I upgraded firmware in NSU in June and re-installed it in July. Same problems.

My firmware version is: v31.2.008 (I thought I didn't have v3x; anyway, I think there's a later version fw for non-US phones--my product code is RM-421)

The phone only has Google maps as an installed app. I shut off the phone every night. I'm in San Francisco bay area, commute from SF to Milpitas along 280/101. Noticed that I get dropped calls more often, and that there are pockets of no cell connection along 280--didn't notice these things before.

I changed it today to 2G only mode. Will report back if it makes a difference. Phone has been shutting off at least once a day. Don't know how often it reboots since I may not notice if it's in my pocket--but I've definitely seen it rebooting, sometimes reboot, then shutoff.

I plan to stop by AT&T store tomorrow to ask for new SIM card. Hope they don't give me a hassle about it. I'm assuming it's OK if they see it's for N95-4, right? I think my phone of record is the 6230.

Updated SIMs are free. However, I had to call customer service to activate the SIM since the store wouldn't do it (I wasn't the main account holder). They shouldn't give you any hassle.

Long time lurker. I live in the bay area too , and over the past 2 weeks my N95-4 has been restarting over 30 times a day (maybe more) when 3G is enabled. I contacted Nokia customer care, and as per their advice did a soft reset, hard reset as well as re-installed firmware. I also went to the local ATT store and got a new SIM card. Currently the phone is only functional in GSM mode.

I hope someone can provide a fix

What version of firmware are you using? The latest version for the N95-4 is v35.2.2 but it requires changing your product code to 0558696 to get this version.
