N82 #-key / Pencil Key / Copy/Paste Issues?

hey everyone - i just wanted to put up a quick poll to see if anyone was having any issues with the "#" button on their n82 - not so much the physical button itself, but the way in which it functions

it seems like a lot of us are having issues when drafting new sms/mms/emails - hitting the "#" key seems to initiate upper case letters in predictive text AND activate the copy/paste mode simultaneously (this is what poses the problem)

others are having issues in other applications (hitting the "#" button acts as the pencil key changing the way the d-pad functions - specifically, the center button of the d-pad - see this thread for more details)

as a quick test - would you mind trying the following?

- open up a new sms (making sure youre in t9 predictive text mode)
- enter in the phrase: "Hello Marksky" (case sensitive) - but instead of spelling out "Marksky" and adding it to the words in your dictionary, just add the "sky" to the end of "Mark" (i hope this isnt confusing)
- basically, you want to add some letters to an existing word in which the first letter is capitalized and the word is in the middle of a sentence (i do this when im sms'ins silly things like "Thats so Keithish" - words i want to put in the message, but dont necessarilly want in my t9 dictionary)

the usual method for this is to do the following:
- type "Hello"
- hit the space key
- hit the # key to get the upper case "M"
- type "Mark"
- hit the right d-pad
- type "sky"

BUT - seeing as there is no pencil-key - it appears as though some n82 owners (including myself) are having to do something different to get the words we want

when we hit the "#" key after the initial "Hello" is typed - it not only activates the upper-case letter, it ALSO activates the cut/copy/paste feature! so basically:
- you type "Hello"
- hit the space key
- hit the "#" key to get the upper case "M"
- type "Mark"
- hit the right d-pad
- "Mark" disappears (oh no!) because that "#" press ALSO activated the cut/copy/paste feature!
- in this case, after we type "Mark", we have to hit the space key (so that Mark is no longer underlined), then delete the space so we can add more characters to the end of his name)

i know there is at least one person for whom this is not the case - i was wondering if we could parse out whose phone does NOT function like this and which product region they have

so, if your phone's # key does NOT function as the copy/paste button (pencil key), please let us know what region firmware youre using (and, id also like to ask whether your shutter sound goes off when the phone is in silent - because if it doesnt - i think ill change my firmware to your region :D )

sorry about the long read everyone...

Just to chime in here. I have Emerging Markets version and I do not have cut/paste from the "pencil" key.

While I do not have the # cut/paste function I do not have the "bug" relating to the "pencil" key disabling the D pad.

I'm Taiwan FW I have this issue. Basically the # acts as a caps-lock or something so in my case I noticed I couldn't hit the center select, but effectively all buttons that are assigned to something with the # button are effectively neutered. Ugh.

The worst of all of this is I went with TW firmware so I could get:
a) taiwanese keypad
b) silent shutter

but now it seems I *may* have to jump ship to HK firmware... although the benefit is I get pinyin input.

Mine works fine because I can switch between text entry and Copy/paste function. The only issue I have if I activated Copy/Paste function and then disabled it, d-pad selection key would not work in the menu. (workaround: switch to another app or standby and back)

Short click: switch between T9 and ABC, abc etc...
Long click: Enable Copy/Paste function
Short click from Copy/Paste function disables the function

I have Euro3 working fine also but Short/Long click are different then in your's:

Short click: switch between T9 and ABC, abc etc...
Hold #: Enable Copy/Paste function, while holding left/right D-PAD to select text and then softkeys (also while holding the #) to copy/paste
When I release the # key the functions return to normal operations.

PS I also had the same problems with the E51 I had before, a full format or flashing with the same firmware and then full format again helped solve the problem.

i think im gonna try reflashing when i get home - it annoys the heck out of me (heavy texter)

watch i end up frying my phone over this

Same problem here. Short press on "#" activates copy/paste function, and only way to turn it off again is to go to standby and back.

Furthermore, might be related, might not: In Nokia Maps, if I press "#" once, it keeps zooming out until I hit "*". It being my first phone with Nokia Maps, I do not know if this is the expected behavior.

^ im using the euro3 product code right now (although it did it euro1 as well and with the original malaysian firmware the phone came with)

i only changed the product code - i believe there is only one firmware version - 10.0.046

but dmo brought up an interesting observation - both of us have garmin xt installed and both of us have the problem - i also noticed in the other thread that domlee0 has the issue and his profile says he has garmin xt

so id like to ask (for both those of you with and those of you without the problem) - do you have garmin xt installed on your phone?

here's how it worked on mine...

type word... if you press the # key a few times the softkeys disappear.. you can then scroll to a word and it will allow you to copy it... and then you can also paste it....

when you are done press and hold the * key (STAR KEY) it'll open up the symbols and also exit out of copy and paste mode...

On my phone to activate copy and paste. You have to hold the # key for at least a second or two, and as soon as you let it go it deactivates.

So if I want to highlight a bunch of lines, I have to hold it and press up, up, up, etc. Let go of the d-pad but still holding the #, hit the left softkey to copy.

Works fine, have yet to have a problem.

Malaysian region, no garmin xt installed.

It seems the problem for you guys is the key is getting stuck. Once you let go of it, it's not registering to the os. Simple bug and should be fixed next firmware. Unless garmin is causing it, then it is obviously garmin's problem, not nokias.

No issues here, I have an "emerging unit" flashed to EURO1, # toggles between the predictive and normal, and if I hold it, it switches to copy and paste but no issues with the centre key.

Yeah. Like I wrote in the other thread I think, if you bring up another menu or a new screen the phone is fine. So if you wait for your screen saver to kick in, everything is back to normal. Or if you bring up an options menu and u close it, then you're good again. It's messy but yeah.

Also I do get the continuous zoom in Nokia Maps. I'm uninstalling Garmin XT as we speak right now and will continue experimentation.

This is the one phone I've had the most troubles with but I've also been playing with the most. S60 definitely is powerful. My W810i was just plug and go but then again you couldn't do as many things.

UPDATE FRI JAN 04 8:29 PM:

It's totally Garmin XT. I removed it, rebooted my phone and holding the # key and letting it go stops the copy/paste mode. It WORKS as expected.

Questions:

1) Does anyone know if Garmin XT has any features associated with the # button?

2) Which version of Garmin XT are you running if you have this problem. I ran 4.10.20 and 4.10.40. Maybe the .60 will update this?

3) Do N95 users have this issue? I notice half the threads I read are N95 threads since the 82 is too new for sufficient resources to be out there.
