N80 - yay or nay?

rcadden

The main thing that put me off about the N80 was the thickness, did you find that to be cumbersome? I generally keep my phone in my pocket so I was worried about that.

Wait for the 95.
I like my 80, but it IS thick.
If you're gunna be using GSM 900 ... forget it altogether - the 1800 is excellent however.
The 80's camera really produces quite disappointing results - not even as good as my w800i (2 MP).
I've gone back to a 6630 - although the one I've gotten from eBay seems to have some charging issues ... might have to swap it.

Would that they did.
Where are you getting your facts ?
GSMArena think you're wrong : -

N73 = standard Li-ion

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n92-1346.php
N92 = standard Li-ion

SE w800i = Li-Poly

As you can see, two people came out and say the N80 is just fine. But they mention the phone is fine if you 'DON'T use the Camera,' which is dumb when you think that the N80 is being advertised as a media phone. Duh.

That's like saying an S40 will last you forever, specially if you don't use it to make any calls on it. LOL

Why do people continue to newb it up about RAM vs memory/storage in these phones?

The N95 will have 160mb of internal STORAGE, for messages, contacts, log, installed applications, or whatever else you want to put there. (versus the N80's 40mb)

The N95 WILL have more RAM, but not 160mb. It should have the same RAM specs as the E61, or 64mb, which should make eliminate the out of memory errors, in theory. The N80, along with most of the 3rd Edition devices, has about 20mb of available RAM on a good day.

I've explained this so many times, you'd think I'd write an article on it and just link people to it?

If the N80 has been fixed, firmware and hardware wise since I owned it, I'll give it a yay. Get it in silver though. The silver is much sexier than the black in my eyes.

^ i go for black on gadgets, i go for white and oriental chicks!

get N93 and wait for the S60 Communicator, but wait, there is already N93i, and N80 price is now very low.... ok, go for N80 ME

just want to add, N95 or to be precised, S60 3rd ed PF1 will give the user the ability to select font sizes and i think it will include the menu system (not sure though), and NO, i dont think current S60 3rd will be able to have this coz the font thing is way deep under the OS...

Hmmm... the more people discuss, the more the N80 seems not-so-bad.

I dont particularly care about the camera. I can point-shoot-wait2seconds.

How easy are firmware updates?
Feature pack 1 seems like an improvement (one thing I hate about my current PPC is not being able to use youtube on it )

As I said - I have an external GPS device - so GPS is not my main driver
I have a 5MP camera - so I am not predominantely getting it for the camera
I have an iPod - so I am not predominantely getting it for the music playback
But I would like to be able to use the phone without wanting to toss it against a wall (like I do with my Blue Angel )

I've been reading about speaker problems with the N80 - what is the deal with that?

(Maybe I should get a nokia 7710 and be completely unique lol)

As for the S60 communicator - super cool concept - but it will be a while.

If you dont' care about the camera, get the N80. You'll love it. It's sexy, I didn't think it was too thick, the screen is outlandishly amazing. I personally loved it, but I need point-and-shoot. Other than the camera, I probably would have stuck with the N80. Go up to a Nokia Experience Center (if there's one nearby) and play with it. It's ALOT smaller than you'd think

Keep pensing, my friend - and save your money.
You could do worse than get a 6630 to tide you over to May - like I did.
Selling my N80 on eBay.
The 6630 is a CRACKING phone - in some respects, functionally better than the N80 and better handling.
It's fast, agile and VERY flexible.
OK, so you don't get synthesised-voice confirmation of voice-tag commands and you can't use the numeric keys in audio player - but everything else is the same.
And unlike the N80, there's a TON of software out there.
Get one.
Get one now !
You know you want to.

Jeece !
Experience centre ?
In the UK, go into a phone shop and if you're lucky, they'll grudgingly get out an old contract 7610 and stand disapprovingly over you while you try to ascertain how much you like the thing.
Experience centre ? ....

Well, in the US, they're a bit behind, but they've got N91's, just out there you walk in and pick it up. And if you chat it up a bit, usually the workers have a newer phone that they're using personally, and they've all been real friendly that I've encountered.

I'm getting my facts from the Nokia website and personal experience with an N73. The N73 comes with a BP-6M and the N92 comes bundled with a BP-5L; both are lithium-polymer batteries as listed.

i am not really very sure but i dont think SE has the license for Li-Po... i think it was ericsson who developed it 1st... and nokia uses Li-Po as well when they see it fit... and i agree that having Li-Po does not guarantee a longer battery life, its all depends in the battery capacity, measured mostly in mAH, and the hardware and os that uses that particular battery...

Hrrm, First off sorry for "newbing" it up with the memory issue.

Conflicting reports on the size, I really wish I could get my hands on one to test it out myself. An Experience center is exactly what I need, unfortunaly I am in the middle of no where Indiana for school at the moment, perhaps I shall see if there is one in Chicago next time I am up that way.

The camera thing is kind of bothering me. I have a stand alone digicam, but its some what dated. I would love to be able to do away with carrying seperate devices, but this is not a huge concern. I like that the N80 has WiFi seeing as how T-Mo now charges $30 / month for true data access. I guess I am just going to have to find a way to play wiht the N80 and the N73 and see which one I like before I go dropping the money for either.

Thought about it,...
Thought about it some more....
Then I thought about it even more...
Then I went and bought it!

I will let you know what I think

How responsive is the UI in the N80?
I remember seeing an N95 video of Howard and he tossed the N80

Also, how is the firmware update process?
I would like to take advantage of FP1

I trust rcadden - he's almost sold me
I don't think there is an experience center in Boston, MA - and I dont feel like driving to NYC to the nokia store

The fact of the matter, regarding the N80 is, that aside the power house that it is on paper, the battery is far to weak to make it a road warrior's phone.
Heck, even for a media guy, the battery life is disappointing.

If you don't care about the camera, as some people have said, then get a cheaper phone. I mean, why buy a phone if you are already writing off a main component of the gadget? Sure, cameras are still not that great on phones yet, but it is one of the main selling points of the N80, who advertises itself as a media heavy phone.
