I recently purchased a generic MIDI-USB cable, and with a little messing around with the computer settings, I found that the MIDI output (sounds going from the PC out to the piano speakers) works fine, but I can't get the piano keys to translate into sounds on my computer, like when playing Synthesia or when recording music with Cubase. I have a Yamaha PSR-E303 keyboard. I've looked everywhere to see if someone else has this issue, but to no avail.
I know the buttons are being recognized as inputs, according to MIDI-OX, and my laptop keyboard outputs piano notes on the piano speaker when I press the keyboard buttons when I use that application, so I'm not sure what else to do.
Also, if you're wondering, exclusivity mode is disabled for all my speakers and microphones. Thanks for the help!
