My cat died...

My cat has been acting weird lately, not at all like himself, hiding under the bed instead of wanting to be in your face, not wanting to play with the dog that he is best pals with, leaving kitty dribbles in the mixing bowl in the cabinet.... he didn't seem to be hurting, just somewhat disgruntled and uncomfortable. I take him to the vet and they jam the thermometer up his ass, and stuffed a syringe up his unit to take a urine sample, which he took in remarkably good grace. Turns out he had crystals in his bladder, and was given some antibiotics and we went home. He looked slightly disgruntled and undignified but not sick. 3 days later, all of a sudden, the cat can't move, goes all limp and cold and his breathing was super labored and shallow. I put him on a heating pad and gave him water w/ a dropper because he was too weak to drink on his own. We were supposed to be having a going away party for a friend at our house, but I spent all night sitting with him and watched him suffer till he stopped breathing. All I could do was sit there and watch him die; it was such a horrid helpless feeling.

He was barely 2 yrs old and it just happened so fast. It was so frustrating to know that he was hurting and there was nothing I could do. Luckily my boyfriend and my friends are great. They left the part to help me bury him. They dug the hole while I wrapped him up, and they helped me bury him in the backyard. They even raided the neighbor's yards for rocks to put on top of him so other animals couldn't dig him up. The dog keeps searching the house looking for his friend, looking in all the cat's favorite napping spots, and looking at me like I have him hidden behind my back. And my boyfriend wants me to get another cat right away to keep they dog company. The cat hasn't even been gone 24hrs yet! I am not ready for another one so quickly. This really sucks.

Im sorry to hear this, I have a cat, I helped him when his mum ran away, Ive had 10 cats through my life, My cat right now is in America, and I miss him so much, We are waiting to get him flown over here, My dad meantion something about how he might be dead, and the people looking after him might look to chicken to tell us, cos we haven't heard anything from them.

But, I have lost one cat, who was this ones brother, he got run over and managed to make it all the way to the back door, It was so bad, my dad cried, It was his best friend. It was terrible, when he got lowered into the ground.

My cat Alma died in December of 2003...17 YEARS! I had never been sadder at the loss of a companion, not even when my first rat Richard died on Christmas Eve...

What was really painful about the death was the fact that she had to be put to sleep...Her thyroid glands were going, and she was getting amaciated from kidney failure. She became incontinent and urinated on my parents' bed, and I had to go to school and could not be with her, or see her ever again.

I just spent the whole day in counseling and cried. That's all I did.

She was older than me...I'm actually crying as I type this...I miss her so much!

My new cat is better, and the sweetest animal I know, but she's rather shy, and not as vocal as Alma was. My new kitty, Katie, makes the sweetest little squeaky meow! It's so cute!

The same thing happened to my cat, she crawled up to my backdoor and started crying, and we had this other cat who wasnt ours but always wanted to come inside, so I ended up thinking that it was that other cat, but I finally went out there and there was blood everywhere and she was just lying there. That night I kept thinking that maybe if I had gone out there sooner, she would be okay.

Yea, that's definitely too bad. I kind of had the same thing happen to me. It was when I was like 10, my cat was about 5, and he had been pretty sick for like a month or so, and throwing up a lot. So, my dad got all mad and sold him. But at least he was living, it's too bad to hear of a death.

I'm sorry about your cat, but personally I hate cats. But this one didn't sound like it would scratch me to death, so its cool.

Jarilith, I know exactly what it's like to watch a cat get sick and slowly die while all you can do is sit and watch, knowing they're in pain. We used to have three cats, but Ethel, my favorite, had kitty luekemia in her intestines or something like that. In February of 2004 she started really feeling it and her body started fading. You could tell she wanted to stay with us because she was alive as long as she was, but her body was slowly degrading. She couldn't keep anything down, and she wouldn't drink any water. Eventually she couldn't move from one spot. We set her up in my parents bedroom on some pillows with some towels for blankets. Then one day Chris and Dad took her in to be put down because they just couldn't take seeing her in pain anymore. When I said good-bye to her she was having a seizure. I cried twice. We have still to this day not gotten another cat. No cat could replace Ethel. Chris also says she wants to wait until all the animals die and she's gotten used to a house without pets before getting new ones.

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, my kitty WAS pretty fucking cool. Even my dad who hates cats had to grudgingly admit that Morpheus (my cat) was "pretty ok, for a cat." He didn't piss or shit all over anything (till he got sick) he didn't ruin furniture, he didn't scratch, even when somebody mercilessly yanked on his little saggy gut skin (plenty of skin, just not quite enough kitty to fill it.) He was like the prozac kitty: he wanted petting from anybody and everybody who came to the house. Didn't wanna pet him? No big deal, no hard feelings, 'I'll just be over here if you change your mind' type attitude. He didn't even shed that much. The dog is still lying under the table all depressed cuz she doesn't understand why she can't find her friend. I am almost afraid to get another one; maybe a new one won't get along with the dog, maybe a new one will spray, maybe blah blah blah....I need to stop worry about maybe. Kitten season is coming up in my area, and I will take my time in choosing one then. I would choose an older cat from the humane society, but I wouldn't want to spring a cat from kitty jail to to have it come home w/ me and have its life be a living hell cuz its all freaked out by the dog.

Uberskippy, We took him to the humane society, and he saw the vet there, Sarah, can't remember her last name. But it seemed like a pretty routine problem, she ran a series of tests and gave him antibiotics. I don't fault her care of my cat. Just one of those freak things, i guess.

It still amazes me how close people get to their cats, and how much it sucks to lose them. What I dont understand is how people can do things like sell your cat out from under you just because they are irritated. SELL??? What kind of tight ass sells a cat with medical problems? I might understand not being able to provide proper medical care and wanting to give the cat to someone who can, but to sell it? That is harsh. Or moving away and stealing somebody's cat when you go. Or being stupid enough to live just around the corner and steal somebody's cat; like they wont ever see it around the neighborhood, or sitting in your front window as they drive by.

Polaris, that has to be hard. I am sorry that happened to you.

Descent, I am not sure what would be harder; to unexpectedlylose a pet that was young, or to lose a pet that had been there for you for your whole life, even if you know that the cat is aging and has to go eventually, since he'd always been there, that would have to be so hard.

The way I understand it, the quarantines they impose on those animals is just insane. For my friends who were working in Bristol, they wanted to bring their dog acquired in England back to the states, and the quarantine period was 6 months, so his wife got a job at the quarantine facility, and stayed in england for another 6 months while her husband went home to the states. Of course, how many people have that kind of luxury? It sucks to not know for sure what is going on. I am sorry to hear that....Its always hard to see your dad cry. :bawling:

The Humane Society does a pretty good job here. But if you decide to opt in for a new cat I could recommend some other vets for you.

My guess regarding a new cat is that when you're ready it'll work out. There are lots of places around here that do cat adoptions. Get one that's been around dogs before, or just get a youngster and the dog should have a new friend. Obviously you can't just replace a cat, but eventually you'll be ready.
