My car is about 10 years old. At low volume, the speakers work OK, but at high volumes the speakers sound all garbled, crackly and staticy. Anyone know why and what can be done?

your speakers could be blown, if the cone moves freely when you touch it, it's probably blown. you'll have to get new speakers.

your head unit (the part you control the radio with) may be too old and underpowered to power modern speakers, it's best to buy a new head unit and new speakers at the same time.

If you want clear sound at very high decibel levels, you're going to have to spend some money and buy premium speakers and an amp to drive them.

it means they are blown, if it doesn't really bother you then just keep them, otherwise its time for new ones.

They may be blown, but now always. It depends on the system, the power going to them and the type of speakers. Smaller and older speaker typically can't handle the higher volumes. Sometimes just replacing them with newer speakers that are capable of higher watts will make them sound better. Really is a complex question because there are a ton of variables and something you should discuss with someone at a car Stereo place. Let them see what you have now and tell them what you are looking for. A lot of places have free installation now as well.

Because you're sending too much power to them. What can be done? Turn down the volume.
