My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

I also wondered about the dress shop owner - how she does her books!

&how can that man say they are self sufficient or self-employed or whatever - which means they work for cash and pay no tax - and yet people have said on here they claim benefits?

You can't opt in and out of society when you feel like it or when it suits you can you?

i bet the tax man/woman might want to see the books of the dressmaker, no doubt she hasnt got an address on any invoices and all invoices paid by cash!

Just watched this on 4od - fascinating programme. Some of those dresses - eek! Sammy-Jo dress was the best of a bad bunch but then she added that 20 foot train to it!

I really felt sorry for Joan - the girl who got married at the end of the show. You could really see that the penny had dropped and she realised she shouldn't have married that bloke. No offence to him, but she could have done much better as she was educated and very well mannered.

It was so depressing the way she was speaking at the end about married life saying they have to make the best of it and make it work. Poor girl has no idea what she's let herself in for.

I havent had much experience with travellers but Im guessing like most aspects of society there is the good and the bad.

I was baffled by the claim that the parents / families are very moralistic (which Im sure they are) but they are content with their daughters walking around in next to nothing like lapdancers?

Still, a very interesting and fascinating insight. I could easily have watched another hour.

Do they still do bareknuckle fighting?

I'm not sure how true this is but what I was told was.. When someone wants to settle a score with another, they will organise a bareknuckle fight in a village or on a road in the middle of nowhere and the police are told to go away (and they do!). As I say, not sure how true that is.

I knew one traveller lad when I was younger, used to hang around with us and he was ok, just one of us basically. Difference being you would see him running about on a horse and trap on the main roaRAB sometimes. I had dinner at his parents caravan (big bloody thing too!) once, the weirdest thing was they would put bones from the chicken they were eating in a jam jar in the middle of the table, I wasn't sure wether to do the same or leave them on the plate and worry it would offend them, I felt so uncomfortable but that was my problem, being overly sensitive and fear of offending.

A friend of mine is a farmer - and he has had loaRAB of problems with them - they just drive in and park up on his private land! He's had to employ all sorts of tactics once they are there - and others to stop them coming in at all. The police can't usually help him either. He's now paying a fortune for electic gates I think to keep them out!

They still do bareknuckle fighting, they sell DVRAB of it door-to-door here in Ireland anyway

Last year I had an little banger of a car in my driveway that I was using to learn in, and I swear every couple f weeks I had travellers at the door asking if I was selling it!

That's exactly the type of travellers we had.

Their caravans were immaculate. Again, not my type of thing, but it wasn't me living in there.

The ones I knew, their mothers had a powerful influence over the family, the kiRAB knew who was boss! ;)

My dad always says they were fine to work with, but just don't do them wrong.

If a venue in that area gets smashed up or set light to you know where to look.

Used to happen in a village near me a pub which was closed more often than it was open was always getting broken into and all the fittings nicked because when a guy I think he was a traveller went in he did get served but because of his behavior he kept getting barred. Everytime he got barred he and his mates would go and ransack the building when it shut for the night. One time he smashed it up because the barman refused to let him and his mates have a lock in.

The pub is now a private home but they did have a break in at one point after it was converted. maybe a coincidence I cant say.
