My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

The show didn't actually show any gypsies, did it? Like Romany gypsies? They all looked like Irish travellers. It surprised me that a couple of them referred to themselves as gypsies, I thought they were entirely different groups?

Heres a thought - and I'm not being rude or condescending - BUT there were a few of them admit that they dont marry outside the traveller community.

So I'm guessing that this is a fairly limited gene pool. Is this why they all look alike?

Yorkiegal - Post 190. That lime green number was a classic outfit! Why didn't I think of that - hell, why are we not ALL attending weddings dressed as green mermaiRAB!

I went to a gypsy wedding once. When we arrived at the venue for the reception we found that all the buffet had been stolen by a rival gypsy family, who were casually walking down the street with trays of sandwiches. We left when the fight kicked off.

I do wonder if Ist cousins marrying is a good thing

That retired boxer said they don't drink, it doesn't seem to stop them fighting apparently !

I'm not sure it's true that they don't date outside their own community. My sister dated a Irish Gypsy for a while, his family were nice (though he was an ignorant git who knew he was good looking), she's still frienRAB with his cousin. Maybe different communities are more integrated, or maybe it's just the girls they're protective of?

I felt really sorry for her, poor girl.

I watched it for the humour value, though I knew I'd get irritated at some point.

I've had no experience with Romany gypsies or anything other than Irish 'travellers'. But every bit of experience I've had with those travellers has been negative.
They may have the highest morals within their own barricaded lives but when it comes to the rest of society they tend to not give a toss.

I've had experience of their antics whilst working in a pub a few years back.
They'd give you a huge order then when faced with the bill, they'd claim that they'd only recieved half of their order.
They cheat and lie and together with their unwillingness to pay insurance or tax on the cars they drive (or the income they recieve), it's no surprise that they've got the money to fund such extravagant tackiness.

Weird:confused: Maybe she was trying to show off her Irish roots?! I felt really bad for Joan when straight after the wedding she started talking about how they were going to have to work hard at their marriage and that it would be difficult. She was being realistic, but it's a shame she felt that way immediately after her vows, there didn't seem to be any romance between them - and he even yawned during the ceremony!

The irish travellers who went to my school certainly didnt care about disgracing themselves. There were quite a few non-traveller girls who got pregnant by the traveller boys and then the boys buggered off, and the girls definitely got around. They also didnt care about stealing from the co-op i worked at.

So i dont buy the whole 'traveller girls are very moral' thing.

The women are good looking until they get married, and then they let themselves go and become pig ugly, both in manner and looks.
