If you're not hearing the engine even attempt to turn when you hit the ignition (like silence), your starter may be shot. Good news is that, in a car with a manual transmission, you can get around that. Pop-starting a stick shift car isn't difficult. It's easier with a friend or if you're facing down a hill, but it can be done on your own...
(1) Put the car in neutral
(2) Get the car rolling forward -- only a couple of mph is necessary. This is where it may help to have the friend. IF YOU HAVE THE FRIEND WITH YOU, once the car gets going, MAKE SURE HE STOPS PUSHING AND ALLOWS THE CAR TO ROLL AWAY FROM HIM. During the completion of this process, the car is going to suddenly stop, as you'll see in a moment.
(3) Throw the clutch in and put the gearshift into 1st gear.
(4) QUICKLY let the clutch completely out and QUICKLY throw it all the way back in. You'll feel the car lurch to a sudden stop, but the car may start!
That's generally applicable if the only problem is your starter. I don't suggest you keep up with this method of starting the car, but it will get you rolling until you CAN put a new starter in, which I suggest you do if that's the problem.
If the engine DOES turn when you hit the key, but it won't start/turn over, then there may be a problem with fuel delivery (fuel pump, other fuel line obstruction) or the electrical distribution system (plugs/points, coil, etc.).
Try the pop-start, and if it works, more than likely, you probably have a faulty starter.
