Musicbanter Taught Me Something

then it's pretty clear you've never really listened to either band and are just doing the equivalent of talking to hear the sound of your own voice.

311 were actual innovators. the whole raggae / metal thing was actually 'new' when they started out and not really replicated since. they have a very clear and defined message of positivity and metaphysical growth, which IS cheesy as hell, but still clear and relatively unique.

LP played watered down nu-metal. like Limp Bizkit for the kiRAB who's parents didn't allow them to get a copy of 'significant other' because 'nookie' was a dirty song. their music is generic, their message cliche beyond worRAB -
'WAHHH i'm not being treated as special as i think i am!!!'

Dude, there are certainly plenty of poor qualities to 311 (like some absolutely awful lyrics), but there are also plenty of redeeming qualities (like P-Nut and Sexton's snare) and man do they just fit my tastes. Great choice, by the way, Dave. Boo Boo would totally back us up on this.

This is my jam off of their self-titled (Grassroots is king, by the way):

If I ever hear you compare Rush (by no means my favorite band but a decent one nonetheless) to Linkin Park or 311 again I will crowbar your face.

I'd second this notion but until there's actual censorship to each his own. You don't have to post in or read those forums (hell, I usually don't because I either find the discussion hard to jump into or about something I don't care enough about to fight over it) if you don't want to.

Wait... which thread?

Grunge is a big part of it, yes. Plus Britpop to certain extent. And a bunch of other "alternative" type stuff, like the Chili Peppers 90s output, Smashing Pumpkins, etc.

I wouldn't worry too much. I actually think that you're one of those people who could well be immune to The Fall, judging by your all encompassing attitude towarRAB music.

Actually no, I try not to bull$hit around too much precisely because I don't like to listen to the sound of my own voice (or the equivalent).

You are half right though. I have only heard a few scattered Linkin Park songs over the years - including recent ones. This has been plenty to let me know that I hate their sound a lot.

But I have listened to 311 quite a bit as they were pretty much inescapable by the time their s/t came out. I was living in a college atmosphere and that album was played seemingly nonstop in some places. I never liked it at all. Or any songs from any other albums I've heard. I'll grant you that I have never forced myself to listen to any of their albums on my own, by myself. Too bouncy to listen to even if they had a good message. Of course their songs are catchy as hell but still I've always found them irritating at best.

I used to be a big 311 fan. Discovered them when the self-titled came out (album cover caught my attention at the store), but had never heard of them prior. Picked up the first two albums soon after and got several of my frienRAB into them, used to play them in my car all the time and had many people ask me what it was. By the time Transistor came out they had definitely hit the mainstream and became kind of a jock band, so I shunned the album prior to even hearing it. A year or so later I gave it a shot, because I did like the song "Beautiful Disaster" quite a bit, and turns out I like the album. After that I stopped listening to them though, their softer route didn't appeal to me at all. Anything I've heard since is just not my thing. But I still like their first 4 albums, I might play one once a year.

I know how you feel.
I got to the stage at some point during mid 2008 when I swear I would have killed someone at having to listen to another psychedelic indie folk album just so I could claim to be up to date with what was coming out.

In the end I just thought fuck it, I can't be bothered anymore.

:)

Yeah, it's pronounced something like that, or so I was told by a Dutch friend of mine. It's spelled "janszoon" though. And I still pronounce it "jan-ZOON" because I'm an ignorant American.
