Music Club

after waiting a few days and letting the album absorb into my subconscious, i'd have to say my opinion of the album is pretty good. i like how they have a good balance between cheeky fun and serious musicality. sure, there are countless other banRAB out there that put out music like this, but that is the same with most genres of music. they don't earn points for originality, but they do get points for pulling off the style well. this is the album i would put on if i just wanted to listen to something fun. if i had to compare these guys to anyone, i'd say they are phoenix on a diet after a few shots of tequila.

the opener "the new government" didn't do much to impress me. it wasn't bad, but it didn't catch my attention all that much. great bassline, but the song was ok other than that. i really didn't feel like i was going to get into the album with that, but the next song "fat horse" was infinitely better to me. still not to the point of musical genius, but it was enough to keep me very interested. i'm the kind of person that decides if an album was worth my time if they can give me even one song that i want to put on repeat. the new government hit that song with "murder in slow motion". i just love that song. the first time i listened to it, there was an obvious build up with a quirky little guitar bit that got me really wondering what was going to happen next. the song then kicked in to a very smooth and driving atmosphere. this was definitely the high point of the album for me. "follow" was another really good song. a very vindictive kind of vibe, but in a very cool way. i liked the contrast of having a very rough verse and then the smooth and ethereal bits singing "follow". the rest of the album alternates between pretty good and forgettable.

overall, i enjoyed listening to this album. i'll keep an eye on these guys, i feel like they will be improving quite a bit in the future.

6.5/10

I don't really understand the clearing thing either.... why don't we just pick them in order? It's not big deal of course just wondering.

I plan to get some input on Bikini Kill in soon. From the first song I think I can tell it's not really something I'll love.

I kinda agree with you on all your points stated in that review. These songs are definitely the highlight of the album, and those are the ones that I usually repeat. I enjoy the rest of the album a lot on a drive, but I sadly forget what I was listening to the second I arrive to my destination, and then find myself humming the songs mentioned.

As for the bolded parts above:

The opening song really disappoints me at every listen. I think they were trying to do this kind of fun introduction to the band

Sidewinder just about said it all as for as a review for me would go.

When i first got the album (which was just a few years ago in Uni), it blew me away. It was my first Ween album and I was amazed at the variety of styles that they managed to cover. A Tear For Eddie's chilled out guitar inspired me to start air guitaring right there with the song. Baby Bitch hit me close to home since I was going through a bad breakup at the time. I couldn't believe a band could make a song so creepy as Spinal Meningitis that I would be nervous to listen to it. All in all, this album is the perfect starter to get into Ween. Part of their appeal is that you never know what they will cover on their albums, so there is such an element of curiosity that it is hard not to check out their other stuff. And trust me, Ween is not adverse to trying absolutely anything. I listen to this album less now, but still highly regard it and I would say I agree with everything Sidewinder said about it including putting them in my top 10. I am privileged to be able to say I have seen then live. For this album...I give it a 8.5/10. The only thing that really knocks any Ween album down for me is the weird repetitive songs that fake out their endings (like Candi). I kinda get what they were trying to do with it but it just got annoying.

I hope everyone who is listening for the first time enjoys this as much as I do!

Ok I didn't care for the bikini kill album, and missed the 2nd one, but 30 SeconRAB to Mars? Cmon guys... let's get a little more original with our recommendations. My 14 year old sister recommenRAB banRAB like that.

That can work.
...or maybe in some way can run the suggestions in order, and then when they're over get another group of suggestions?

Whatever works best of course...

Edit: about what Sugar said, I don't think a theme should be in order... maybe just a limited nuraber of suggestions, and not necessarily participants.

Avant-garde jazz isn't something I'm familiar with...to tell the truth I've never listened to anything quite like this. And so I took awhile to absorb and perhaps wait to comment till others had chimed in first. I guess I'll go first though, and hopefully don't end up sounding like a moron.

I listened to this about 10 times now all the way through, which is no problem at all since it's very short. Not that short is a complaint...makes it much easier to digest the whole thing and never once got boring for me. I will admit that I wasn't totally feeling this on the first listen or two, but with repeated spins I've actually grown to like it quite a lot.

The first track, Seventeen Years, is really just beautiful by itself, with it's bassline and clever instrument effects. The random bird sounRAB added in were really cool, and I felt like this song and the cover photo reflect on each other perfectly. That one was probably my favorite, followed closely by Hasi mtu anakuwa chanya. Something for X was good as well, as it felt different and more like straight-forward jazz than the other songs on here. Place of Waste, which clocks in at less than 1.5 minutes, also deserves a mention...with its menacing and jarring fuzzy guitars, it really sounded like nothing else on the album. The inclusion of those two short and diverse-sounding tracks gave me the idea right away that they were put there to help tell a story. As many times as I listened though, I couldn't quite put the story together in my head...maybe because it was so short and some of the titles don't give enough info? I'd actually love to get more details on how exactly the story (if there is one) is supposed to unfold and where the cover photo is from.

Even if this isn't my thing, I can still tell you that I did enjoy it, and it's obvious that you're very talented. It's good enough that I'm gonna keep it and listen to it more from time to time. Nice work man. :)
