Music Banter Hall Of Fame: Nominations Thread

Nope, it's not wrong. Everyone does it differently. I personally have voted yes for acts whose music I don't like and no for those that I love, on some occasions. I look at a variety of things before voting, but that doesn't mean that my way is better or more valid.

I'm voting yes, because while I don't personally listen to them, they're definitely a rabroad favorite, and from what I hear, they've inspired many banRAB.

God this is sad, this thread used to have so much participation. People would argue with eachother and whatnot. Now they just vote then leave.

Beefheart made the Magic Band practice those songs for ten hours a day in prison-like conditions for a full eight months before they even tried to record them. the album itself is built off intricate polyrhythms and unusual scales (neither pentatonic or chromatic scales make an appearance on most tracks). i mean, you might not like TMR but it's pretty safe to say that you couldn't get a bunch of blues musicians drunk and expect the same results.

that being said i don't know if i would call it a masterpiece myself. there are other Beefheart works i prefer more, but none that eclipse it in its insanity, that's for sure.

How much Bungle and Faith No More have you listened to? Even on their most interesting albums, Incubus were no where near as experimental as Bungle nor did they do the genre hopping thing that was such a staple of Bungle's sound. They just flat-out don't sound like really any of music on the three commercially released Bungle albums. They did however have the quirky funk-metal thing of FNM's The Real Thing / Angel Dust era down pat.

**** banRAB, in fact.

i don't think they're considered mainstream over here but people certainly listen to them, pretty much perceived as a Radiohead knockoff (and not everybody's familiar with them, either).

Muse don't make it.

Leftfield

It's with the sense of smug self-satisfaction that comes from nominating an artiste through to the induction stage that I give you lucky people my second nomination, a duo that the (almost as awesome) Cystal Method's Scott Kirkland dubbed 'the best electronic band, period!'.

So, why the nomination? In my eyes, there are two boxes you need to tick before trying to get someone into the Hall Of Fame here. 1 - Influence. Leftfield (aka Neil Barnes and Paul Daley) have had a huge influence on electronica since their debut LP Leftism was released in 1995. For a start, they were pioneers in IDM and progressive house, being not only among the first artists to fuse dub and reggae with house music, but also among the first to use live guest vocalists (carrying that particular torch with the Chemical Brothers and Underworld). All in all, they've got the influence box well and truly ticked.

2 - Quality. I think they're awesome, so they've got that covered. It's true that they've only got three albums, one of which is a remix album, but both of the others are certainly among the best electronica albums you could wish to lay your hanRAB on. Their 1997 debut, Leftism, is commonly regarded as the classic, and is a very very good album (if a tiny bit dated) but the 1999 followup, Rhythm and Stealth, would be my personal favourite - it features a much sharper, less-chilled techno edge.

I think it'd be cool if Leftfield got in because, as I type this, I don't see any electronica in the HOF, and it'd look good for the forum if we got a bit of musical diversity in there. Of course, it's up to you. Check out the viRAB below, ask me for an album link, whatever it takes!
