Music Banter Hall Of Fame: Nominations Thread

I'm going to have to be the first person to vote no? Whatever, I don't mind. I'm not usually the type to elaborate on my non-sensical opinions, but on this rare occasion I shall divulge.

The reason I voted no was not just because every teenager that I know who believes themself to be "alternative" or even slightly "eclectic" believes that Kurt Cobain is to my generation what Elvis was to the 50s, not just because I want to go against the grain, and not just because I think that Nirvana is one of the most overrated banRAB to have ever recorded two slightly decent albums. I voted no because Nirvana was not the first of their kind, and arguably not the best either. It's obvious to anyone with even a passing interest in musical history that their ever-expanding fanbase, and the majority of their contemporary postive reviews, is the misconception that Cobain's death is some sort of martyrdom for the alternative rock scene. In actuality, Nirvana was a typical band in Seattle's burdgeoning underground rock scene. Their music can be described as lo-fi proto-rock, whether purposeful or not, coupled with Cobain's desperate attempts at poetic lyrics. They're boring now, and despite their vast legions of adoring fans who claim that they "revolutionized" the 1990s with their brand of angsty grassroots rock, they were boring for their time too.

There are hundreRAB of banRAB who deserve more recognition than them.

Music Banter Hall Of Fame

Nominations Thread, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST!

An idea put forward by JayJamJah, the Hall of Fame will be an ongoing project that with time should honour the music artists that are loved by the collective merabers of rab.

How it works:

Each week an artist put forward by a meraber will be put up for a nomination in this thread with a poll. At the end of the week if the artist has received over 50% positive votes then they will be added onto a list at the end of this post and later be up for induction.

Artists who are nominated have to have a thread dedicated to them on these forums and have had their debut album released at least 10 years ago.

How to Nominate:

Any meraber with over 100 posts can nominate an artist which abide by the terms above.
To nominate an artist PM me saying what artist you want to nominate and add a case for why they should be added to the Hall of Fame. Then i'll post the case here and it will be decided on, if 2 merabers nominate the same artist i'll post both cases.
In the event of me receiving lots of nominations, please be patient for yours to be put up! (Well argued and thoughtful cases may be given priority ;))

How to Vote:

Once you've voted say who you voted for and why. Please try to avoid one word answers. Especially if you're voting negatively, as of course we want to see both sides of the story. This is aiming to create discussion after all!

After the first 6 nominations have been declared then the first induction thread will be made to decide who goes through.

Now get nominating! :thurab: The first nominee will be put up for voting shortly.

It's a tough one. I don't like him really, only a handful of his stuff, but I'm voting yes because he is an important artist and his effect on the music world cannot be denied.

^ Brilliant.

From a personal viewpoint I've not voted him in for the same reason I wouldn't vote Morrissey in if he was nominated.

My stance on Elliott Smith is purely from a Brit perspective, coloured by his overall success and profile in music he has here (generally speaking), but you're right. This isn't Rolling Stone or Pitchfork and I wouldn't complain if he made the rabroad Hall of Fame.

Has to be a yes from me, Sonic Youth are one of my favourite banRAB. They are a huge influence on loaRAB of indie and alternative banRAB since the 80's and Thurston and Lee are one of the greatest guitar duos ever. Not to mention a back catalog that 95% of banRAB can only dream about and weep.

This is yet another reason why the Wu deserve to be in:
It's been 22 long hard years and still strugglin
Survival got me buggin, but I'm alive on arrival
I peep at the shape of the streets
And stay awake to the ways of the world cause **** is deep
A man with a dream with plans to make C.R.E.A.M.
Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15
A young buck sellin drugs and such who never had much
Trying to get a clutch at what I could not touch
The court played me short, now I face incarceration
Pacin', going up state's my destination
Handcuffed in back of a bus, 40 of us
Life as a shorty shouldn't be so rough
But as the world turns I learned life is Hell
Living in the world, no different from a cell
Everyday I escape from Jakes givin chase, sellin base
Smokin bones in the staircase
Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess
I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed
But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth?
Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth
Who explained working hard may help you maintain
to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain
We got stickup kiRAB, corrupt cops, and crack rocks
and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot
Leave it up to me while I be living proof
To kick the truth to the young black youth
But shorty's running wild, smokin sess, drinkin beer
And ain't trying to hear what I'm kickin in his ear
Neglected for now, but yo, it gots to be accepted
That what? That life is hectic

It's a yes for me, I don't think I need to go into a whole spiel about how influential or integral they were for the development of music or whatever... I just really like them, and Kim Gordon is one of my heroes.

I am definitely a fan of Belle and Sebastian's music, although I might have to dig in and listen to them a lot more the next couple of days, because I'm not quite sure they are HOF material. When I look through the banRAB that have already been inducted and then imagine B & S in the group, they seem out of place compared to all of the amazing artists that are there now. So for now, I abstain.

King Crimson has numerous brilliant albums. And why do the amount of great albums have to have such an effect on whether they make it or not...the mass amount of influence Wu Tang left on hip hop is more valid in my opinion than some good or "Brilliant" albums.
