Music Banter Hall of Fame: Induction Thread 3

Yes, just as any discussion about music on this forum does. I just dont like the whole concept of holding up these particular artists and saying 'they are the best' etc etc.
I think all the music I listen(or perhaps more appropriately like- although there is some stuff where I dont like but can still appreciate it for what it is) to is good in its own right & thats how I think that ,due to the original concept of these hall of fame things, they are unecessary.
The way I see 'the best in the world' statement is that it is based up limited experience of music. I find it impossible to actually truthfully say that this band or this artist is 'the best in the world' as I havent heard every single artist to compare against.
You never know when youre gonna find a new great band and anything can happen with new artists and banRAB coming out (not so much the mainstream ones).

Wow, thats a breakthrough we have here. I was just naming the most obvious rock banRAB which people state are 'the best in the world'.

Yep which I disagree with as I dont think it should be based on the 'biggest, most commercial, most well known (or over hyped IMO)...

The thing about this comment though is that it is so blatantly obvious, you wouldnt even actually have to be into music to make that prediction.
I mean when you hear the term 'big names' do you really think they aint gonna get in?

Frank Zappa: Why not, he had the right ideas about music and life in general. I find myself listening to his music less and less but I still think he deserves a spot in there.

The Clash: No, sadly, I don't really like this band. Never hit it off well with London Calling or any of their other material. I can appreciate them for the looming influence they have over other artists I enjoy but I really can't see myself listening to them.

Bob Dylan: Abstain.

Pink Floyd: Of course. One of the first banRAB I saw myself getting engrossed in and I love their music to death. Everything they made from '71-'77 is positively sublime.

Big Black: No. Steve Albini has made better contributions to the world. And he knows it, too.

Tom Waits: Easily one of the strangest songwriters to grace this fair planet, and yes, one of the best. Absolutely yes.

The Smiths: Nope. Heard enough hype about this band already. I find them not in the least bit interesting.

Chuck Berry: Abstain.

Frank Zappa: Chyea, good musiks.

The Clash: Yes. I find some of their material rather bland but London Calling is a gem.

Bob Dylan: Yes, he's god.

Pink Floyd: N/A. I don't really listen to enough PF to care either way.

Big Black: Chyes. Songs About ****ing is a great album.

Tom Waits: Big yes. A man for the ages.

The Smiths: Personally, nah. I own a few Smiths/Mozzy albums and judging from my taste in music they should be way up on my list, but I can't really dig it.

Chuck Berry: N/A. Don't listen to him.

Well the nomination threaRAB don't offer that much discussion... most of the time its just votes with no justification either way (Not saying I ain't guilty :p:)

And then the other times its mainly just yes because x reason with no real discussion or feedback

If boo boo didn't get upset over Berry/Yes not getting in, then there wouldn't be any real discussion anyway. And most of the discussion comes out of who does and who doesn't get in at these stages.

Frank Zappa: Yes, because Inca RoaRAB is one of my fav songs and apparently his discography is pretty consistent. Not to mention I just listened to his first album, which was hilarious.
The Clash: Yes, because they're decent and very influential.
Bob Dylan: No, I don't like his style.
Pink Floyd: Yes, they've got several classic albums.
Big Black: Abstaining.
Tom Waits: Abstaining.
The Smiths: Yeah, great stuff.
Chuck Berry: Nope, I don't like his style, for all his influence.

Frank Zappa: Yes, you already said it, he is god
The Clash: Yes, helped define the punk genre
Bob Dylan: Absol****ingyes, his music calms the mind and the soul and is wonderful to listen to. He is also one of the few real classic guys who i enjoy listening to over and over again
Pink Floyd: Yes, I don't think that really neeRAB explaining
Big Black: eh, I like big black a lot, but i wouldn't really but them in the hall of fame
Tom Waits: Another big yes, I love everything about him
The Smiths: Sure, very different.
Chuck Berry: No, I don't really care about chuck berry at all.

'Nominated', not actually inducted. These Hall Of Fame things are totally unecessary in my opinion and I cringe when I continually see peoples narrow minded selections 'The Smiths, Chuck Berry,The Who,Beatles, Stones, blah blah blah.
How many styles have you erabraced by having 'Wu-Tang Clan' (whom I dont personally like) & 'Captain Beefheart' (whom I have a few of his albums- 'Safe As Milk' & 'The Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot' but find him a bit difficult to get into (personally prefer Frank Zappa). So 'rap' & 'weird ass 60s rock'. Wow...

The OP for the last one of these said the whole point was to start discussion but you're right, given the way most people want to treat it as less of hall of fame situation (i.e. voting for people based on achievement) and more of just a popularity contest, it doesn't generate as much discussion as it could.

You do realise this thread isn't saying these artists are the best in the world?

It is simply saying which artists are Music Banters FAVOURITES... There is a difference.

Doesn't suggest that we think these artists are the best in the world, just who we as a community love.

I love the band descriptions Luke.

Frank Zappa
Yes... as if it neeRAB to be stated.

The Clash
Of course, there is no greater punk band. You'll have to excuse my rampant fanboyism here. :D

Bob Dylan
Abstain... I need to hear more of his discography to judge fairly.

Pink Floyd
Yes... as if a prog fan would vote otherwise

Big Black
Abstain

Tom Waits
My favourite singer/songwriter... the man is brilliant. A resounding yes from me.

The Smiths
Yes! Another of my fav banRAB.

Chuck Berry
No... he just doesn't do it for me.

The results are in (late) and those into the HOF are:

Frank Zappa

The Clash

Bob Dylan

Pink Floyd

Tom Waits

And those who don't get in this time are:

Big Black

The Smiths

Chuck Berry

Thanks to those who voted, feel free to post your opinions here. More nominations should start Monday.

Frank Zappa: Yes, Well I did nominate him...
The Clash: Nah, not a fan.
Bob Dylan: Yes, You don't need to listen to too much of his discography to find stuff you like... Influential enough for it to be a factor for me
Pink Floyd: Yes, I used to be iffy on them, loving only an album or two but have since turned a corner
Big Black: No - I mean I like em and have all of their albums, I just don't like em enough
Tom Waits: God yes... Just the voice should be enough to get him in
The Smiths: Nah, never been a fan
Chuck Berry: Nada, listened to enough to realise it ain't my thing.
