Music Banter Hall of Fame: Induction Thread 2

Radiohead - Yes I agree with previous statements, they are one of the most innovative groups out there and they continue to experiment and try new things in their music.

The Kinks - Yes As said, they are a really fun band to listen to. They have plenty of great, highly accessible music (that doesn't get boring) that has influenced so many other great acts.

The Beach Boys - No Good band, but they don't do enough for me. For each song I like there's way too many that are just meh.

Public Enemy - No opinion (I have barely heard anything by them - not a hip hop person)

That's a horrid f*cking ethos. For one, "innovation" and "influence" are subjective terms, and another: if we don't reserve our personal opinions, there's little point to voting in the first place.

That being said the use of pop hooks doesn't exactly quantify "innovation."

Radiohead: Yes, though overrated greatly in music forums like this one, they are still probably the most important band of the last 20 years, so they greatly deserve it.

The Kinks: Why of course, you can't leave out one of the big 4 of the british invasion can you?

The Beach Boys: Yes, only reason not to vote for them would be out of personal taste

Public Enemy: Hey yeah, should be no argument for this one, most important hip hop act ever.

Of course innovative and influence are subjective terms but there is a strong case that they were both. I am of the opinion that pop hooks are harder to write than is given credit for and The Beach Boys wrote great ones in droves. They also had what at the time was a fairly unique sound. It may not sound like that today but it was at the time fresh and new and they had a massive influence. Bear in mind that in Australia their type of surf pop still gets a thrashing today. I never play them now and am not that fussed if they are included or not but if the Hall Of Fame is only based on personal likes only without any of those other considerations then I am not sure what the point is.

Radiohead: Yes because, to me, they are the best thing out there right now. I don't know what my life would be like with out them.

The Kinks: Yes because this is an incredibly fun band. Mi Madre loves them so they have some family relevance to me.

The Beach Boys: No. This one was tough, like it was in the first round, but to me they can't make it in off of fun but somewhat average pop tunes. Pet SounRAB is great, but if Neutral Milk Hotel couldn't make it in off of the success of one album then The Beach Boys certainly don't make it in (In my eyes).

Public Enemy: No. The Unfan said it perfectly. Maybe I just don't get it, but to me they just aren't worthy of Hall of Fame status.

If you don't like them fine, vote no, but they're arguably the most influential Hip Hop group ever, their influence goes far beyond 'other conscious hop hop bores'.

Radiohead - Does it really matter what I chuck here? :p:

The Kinks
Definitely. Great, fun band that everyone should get a solid listen to, not just the hits.

The Beach Boys
No. Just not my thing, and although influencing a popular demographic probably didn't do enough.

Public Enemy
Well they definitely should be... Hellllllllllllllll yeah

Radiohead: No; wretched band.

The Kinks: Yes, if only for the original VGPS and their early "rock" singles.

The Beach Boys: No. I can't think of a single track I want to hear again.

PE: Eh, I'll have to abstain from this one. Haven't really heard enough to judge.

Counted 'em up and this time the following have been inducted:

Radiohead

The Kinks

Public Enemy

And the one not to get in:

The Beach Boys

Fun Fact: While the golden boys got 8 negative votes The Kinks didn't get a single negative vote!

Feel free to discuss the results here, the next lot of nominations starts next week.

well i think what's obvious from the posts is that not enough people are familiar enough with PE to give them a well-deserved place in the hall... which is a big shame =/

maybe the Tribe have a fighting chance

I understand the influence and blah blah blah, but when it comes down to it, they're not very good IMO, and I don't much enjoy the hip-hop acts today that mimic them.
