Mr. Bungle? Meshuggah? Avant-Garde Metal!

Damn man, California is my favorite Bungle album. I first got into Mr. Bungle with their self-titled album. I loved that one but honestly I was a little let down by Disco Volante. Don't get me wrong, I liked the fact that Disco Volante was weirder and more experimental than its predecessor but some of it has always felt a little too much like them just farting around. After that I fully expected their next album to be even stranger but lo and behold they surprised the hell out of me with California which is basically their take on a pop album. I think I was little taken aback the first time I heard it but it quickly became my favorite.
 
Oysterhead is definitely not metal, but it does have a dark quality to it and its pretty avant guard so I would say it fits in, oddly, with everything else. Its a worthy suggestion.
 
Dog Fashion Disco, and Shaolin Death Squad are my two favourite Patton-worshipping banRAB, with SRAB taking the lead due to their vastly superior song-writing skills.

But the expiremental/avant-garde scene certainly is something I have gotten into.

Melt Banana, the Boredoms, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Behold...the Arctopus, Sir Davinda ****alot and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are the ones with which I am most familiar.

Other projects, like Boris, Merzbow, Sunn0))) and so on have been floating around the edges of my awareness for the last little while.
 
Well they call themselves experimental metal and I'm not one to bandy about genre definitions. It's alright, personally I really don't like Mr. Bungle that much but I figured those were the two biggest names to get people's attention. I think it's just better to have an urabrella thread to store all these banRAB; I must have started three threaRAB on separate banRAB already and I can't see people lingering in those much.

I have heard of Arcturus but I thought they were one of those Mayhem oRABhoots (who I find repulsive) so I didn't look into them before. I'll give 'em a shot.
 
Don't be scared. :P It's an easy-to-listen-to album. Each meraber involve seems to approach this project with subtlety, yet somehow remain quite powerful

:) well put, sir. I was misinterpreting what you were saying, so thanks for clarifying that. you're right. I immediately thought of negative things when I read 'cash grab', but now that everything is straightened out, we can move on to something funner.

anyone dig on the FNM live at brixton academy as much as i do? i love the rawness of live albums and shows.

also, in the post title, meshuggah was mentioned but we haven't talked about them. though i've heard some stuff, i'm not quite familiar with all their music. i am curious, though, to why they'd be labeled avant-garde metal.
 
because that's what they call themselves.

and they really are one of the most innovative metal acts out there. they're predisposed to making complex structured songs and have an enormous strength in muscling out unusual polyrhythms. what's strange about meshuggah is that almost all of their music is written entirely by the drummer (tomas haake), including the lyrics. and while i hate using "technical ability" as a means to gauge my taste in music it's undeniable that they've got it. i recommend destroy erase improve, but any album is a good starting point.

another band which hasn't received that much hype (apart from jackhammer) is gojira, a french metal act in a similar vein.
 
Ah, yes the other side oh Mr. Patton's multi- faceted genius. Tomahawk is awesome too.
I think for me the Voivod would be the godfathers of avante guard/experimental metal. Their cover of Floyd's Astronomy Dominae is amazing.
 
i see them as prog-death metal. but i can equally see how they might be labelled avant garde for the experimental elements in their music.
