If you want. For me, I used full songs but that was just a test. But just find a program that will cut it down to 30 seconds or less. For example, I use Virtual DJ to mix my music. I bought this years ago so look it up.

When I put it on my phone, the icon is a piece of paper and it won't let me play it or use as it a ringtone. Help?

Easy... yes, it goes to OTHER on your memory stick (by default), then when your finished bring over ringtones and the phone is off the cord to the computer, let the phone reset itself, and then go find the ringtones you downloaded. Sadly, only can do one by one. Find the ringtone, scroll over it, click on MORE, Manage file, Move then it will give you an option where to put it. Make sense? Sorry, I would have replied sooner but I was at work last night. Thankfully I'm off for the next 3 weeks!!! VACATIONS BABY!

Anywho, let me know if it works.

I would like to say thanks for sharing your way of setting an mp3 as a ringtone. I got this phone thinking that you can set mp3s as ringtones without going through these steps. After I found out I couldn't do it without your help, I wanted to throw away this phone.

hi ,
i have tried as the steps given to make mp3 as a ringtone. but after selecting and clik on drm packager , mp3 song is converted (but shows as lock picture with the mp3) but after transferring the file to memory stick , there is no option to select it as ring tone and it gives message , this file can not be played. can you help me in this matter?

if you use the method i posted than no song dont have to be cut down, the method i posted is basically lowering the bitrate which lowers file size, wont sound CD quality but if you want a whole song than best way to do. Or just cut it down to 30 seconds which is what i do.

OK, after you have made the ID tag to "none" from your MP3 and trimmed the portion of the song you want to about 20 seconds (this is done for three reasons-1.save memory2.answering machine picks up anyway3.phone won't use it if it's longer.

Then I have to assume you loaded the software that came with your phone or downloaded from sony/ericsson web site (media manager)

You now can browse the folders on both your memory stick or internal memory. Simply move the cut song to the ringtone folder (or actually any folder). Unhook phone, browse to the song, and "use as" ringtone.

I can't seem to get this to work, I downloaded everything and I have successfullly created the .dm file I think? But when i use the sony ericcson pc software suite my phone isn't showing up properly when I click on the "My w580i" icon the phone or memory stick folders don't show up and I can't transfer any type of file to it either in file transfer mode or phone mode. any ideas??

Before I go about downloading this program:
1.this is most likely what I will have to do to get my ringtones to work on service through AT&T?
2. to start downloading, do I click on my accountthat is highlighted in the steps above? then enter the verification code?

Ok now this is an odd problem I'm having right now, and it's quite frustrating. I have done this procedure to get my mp3 as a ringtone about a month ago, and it worked fine, now that I try to do it again, it's giving me an error that I can't copy the .dm file to my phone. I would like to point out that I do not see different options[the memory stick, or the phone's memory] to put my .dm file into, I am in phone mode, I have followed all the steps many times to make sure I haven't missed anything. If anyone has any idea what's going on please inform me!

Listen, it worked great. I mean im good with computers and new techs but i must have been doing something wrong in the first place. I can now use my mp3s as rings. How cool is that, not having to pay Rogers more money to use a feature thats already on my phone.

Thank you Dalton for your quick response and i'll make sure to check out the new threads on this forum.

I know how to change it in like 1 try, download WavePad off google, then find your song, install it, open it, File>Open>your song name then find the part of the song you want, when yoru done, click Start New or something liek that, the first button to the left above the music, then click ok to everything and paste your song, after that save it and bam uplaod it to your phone on file transfer mode and it works
