This method does not work for W580i, may work for other models
For the W580i branded by Rogers Canada, simply convert your ringtone file into mono (very important) .wav, and place it anywhere into your phone (the "ringtones" folder for convenience), select more -> use as -> ringtone, and you're set. Simple as that. Yes I just tested this a few minutes ago.
Thanks SO much for the person who mentioned the conversion into .wav file!! I'm so happy I can finally set my own tones and not use the ridiculously stupid default ones ^^

i did all of this and im in file transfer mode and i saved my clip but now how do i upload it onto my fone?

i have some problems regarding this part of you're instructions
"It will have a pop up saying you have transferred a music file, click yes to install it into the Music folder.
After that another pop up will come up asking you how to use it. In the list of options, choose "Ring tone" and you are done!"

however, it never asked my permission to transfer songs, and the songs automatically downloaded itself into my phone. It never asked me if i wanted to use it as a ringtone as well. Also, when it showed up [in my phone, in the memory part], the key symbol beside each song, had a red cross going through. So, i really dont know what went wrong. I used the older version of DRM to convert my songs. What DRm packager did you use though? The new one, or old one? I have a vista computer, so i tried installing the newer version of DRM, and its options did not include converting mp3 files, so i couldnt even convert my songs

awesome tutorial!!!! now i will enjoy my laughing shark ringtone from strange wilderness haha

Im new here but Dalton I wanna say thx, although im having a prob of my own. I have the SE W580i and im also with Rogers.

Everything worked fine until the very last step. I get a popup on my phone but its not the right one. It says 'file saved in ''others'' folder on memory stick'. I tryed taking out the MS but then it did the same but on the phone's memory.

I did see on your post that the protected file must not go in the Memory stick or phone memory and I did all that. Im stuck and i really had gotten my hopes up about all this.

I need help, feedback ohh please!

Alright I have figured it out I suggest downloading MyPhoneExplorer for the Sony Ericsson phone. I did a google search. Once this is intstalled and setup when you click on file it will come up with the folders either stick or phone memory. Then you just follow the directions in the first post.

OH MY GOD i figured out the EASIEST way. If nothing else works for you, here is what i did.
I downloaded a program called Audacity, and shortened the song. (I usually just take the corus of a song or whatever you like) and went to export this selection
i saved it as a WAV file, then hooked my phone up to my computer and dragged and dropped the WAV song file into my phone and BAM it worked!!!! i am so happy, after 4 hours of trying diferent things and nothing worked, 10 minutes before i was going to bed i just tried this one simple thing and it worked!!!! YAY

No.

I'm kidding. Go for it. Just do me a favor though. Come back here to this section and give me feedback on what you used to get MP3's to work on your phone and what service your with and if it worked. You know... all the details so we can help others.

So I have a question then, I downloaded from Rogers Music Store a song but cant use it as a ring tone. Is that the MP3 one that I need to download from them? Cause I don't mind downloading a couple from Rogers as long as I can use it as a ringtone. Or are you all talking about the ring tones in general that are the MP3's for the Sony. I just got the phone and that is the biggest disappointment about it.
